I'm brand new to collecting and I just found this 1983 penny with a broken line that I refer to as the "WHO SHOT LINCOLN?" penny cause it looks like a bullet trajectory that enters Lincoln above his tie and exits out his upper back. There's also another short broken raised line that goes under his beard. Can anyone give me feedback as to uniqueness or value? Thx, J
Your 1983 Cent is a Copper Plated Zinc Cent What you have is a common Plating Blister. Not a Die Break. No premium.
Plating Blisters Definition: This error type occurs only on copper-plated zinc cents from 1982 to the present. Blisters form during the strike when expanding gas pushes up the copper plating from heat and pressure. A weak bond between the copper plating and the zinc core is a necessary prerequisite as are contaminants within or under the plating.
Just a note: regular numismatics is not some kum-bah-yah, touchy-feely, do y'own thang, type of deal. It has standards and norms. Yes, I know people like to rebel against things like standards, and some will support that, but not the mainstream. Yes, you (collectively) get to make this hobby what it will be, but you don't get to make unimportant things become important. Sorry, it's just not like that.
Cool, thanks for your replies. There seems to be no end to new info when it comes to collecting. I'm really enjoying the process.
I nabbed the bottle of James E. Pepper 1776 Straight Rye Whiskey 100 Proof Unfiltered at the Silent Auction of the ANA banquet. When I finally give up and let this site drive me to drink myself to death, I plan to be well-armed. It came with a pair of themed rock glasses, one Declaration, one Preamble to the Constitution, and what looks like an utterly flawless 3-coin 1976 silver mint set. I bought in because my necktie had Constitution quotes on it.
