Hey guys, I've come across this cent, and I'm on the edge with it. It is very cheap, IMO, a very good price. Mine for $85, shipping included. Except, I don't know. Seems almost too good to be true. Thoughts? Opinions? I always get a little weary when purchasing a big coin of the internet, please pardon me if this comes across dumb. All help will be appreciated. Thanks! Phoenix
My honest opinion, Phoenix, where else do you think you're going to find one of these? I think it's a fair price. If it's in your range, I don't even care if it was rubbed or cleaned (and I'm not saying it was). I guess the way you ask the question (you're leading the witnesses, counselor!), you make us want to find something against the prospective purchase, but I can't, not on a key like this. Hope this helps. And if you think it's dumb, well, you ask a dumb question, you get a... (hey, settle down, you started this! ). Good luck.
My knee-jerk reaction was, "that is an incredibly ugly coin". LOL, seriously, there's something about it I don't like. Not sure what though.
Phoenix, I like it and I dont think youll find one for your set for cheaper. But that damage to the rim looks recent. Too bad that happened, I bet the guy selling it did the damage and thats why hes selling it cheap.
The date and MM are all wrong IMHO. The mintmark is the wrong type for this year--it could be because of the scan. And the date--the 1 looks like it was reworked, and the 3 is taller than the 9. From the pic's I see of 31-S the 3 is just as tall....also the middle point of the 3 looks sharper than normal. Again---this could all be because of a scan making it look funny---if you can check the coin out in hand get a good set of pic's from this year and go over them. If you don't feel good about the coin PASS. I think for alittle more $$ you could get a nice AU/UNC. I got one for $125 and it was later graded MS64 by NGC. Speedy
IMO if you have misgivings about a coin, skip it. Trust your 6th sense. Probably right a lot more often than wrong.
OK Dick Tracy, you talked me into it. If you blow it up, you can see it. What's that S sitting on, a pothole? What's that underneath it? It looks a little fat, too, in the midsection. And the second 1 is out in right field, someplace, it's a little too far from the 3. Could have been a 4, but not necessarily. Could be some freak variety, too, but not necessarily. But let's say it is a fake. His issue, now, is, is it worth his money to have an example of that? He ought to see if he can find some of these on ha.com, and compare this area. If he wants the McCoy, I do think I was a little too endearing, as there are questions, here, that need to be resolved. But, if it is bogus, I'd stay in the game, and try to talk this seller down. Mention the nick in the rim, and the overall lackluster appearance. Even if this isn't genuine, I can still see it selling at the right price.
Wanna buy a bridge? Or how about a 20 foot pole.... Stay away from this one. I think the S has been added. Its way to flat and there is a major crater under it.
Thanks all for the opinions! They are really appreciated. I'm going to skip this coin, and purchase a few others I need. Just had a bad feeling, glad I didn't jump the gun. Thanks for the help, and if anyone wants it, here's the link. Thaks all. Phoenix
I do not like the 2nd "1" either - both "1"'s in the date should be nearly the same - they look different to me. The blotch under the mintmark also causes me concern. Could be that its just the picture - but you never know until you see it in person. I would pass on this one.
