Another close and entertaining match comes to a close. Results #7 @BenSi - 80 #10 @Cucumbor - 93 Winner Our players came to an even tie in the eye appeal category and were within 3 votes in the interest category (practically a tie). A slight advantage for Q's $14 zoo coin in the bargain category carried the day! Congrats to both players for putting up what was one of my favorite matches of the tournament so far. @Cucumbor will advance to take on @Jay GT4 in Round 3 in a France vs Canada showdown! It's going to be fun!!
Oooh, I am glad this won't be a soccer match! Congrats, Q! (I dread to think what you're saving up for later rounds!) @BenSi, well, it's always tough for a Byzantine to conquer with this crowd, but your coin made a spectacular showing, this was a close one. A very special coin indeed, well done, sir!
Its true the Eastern Roman coins don’t capture people’s imaginations unlike the western Roman coins, in fact most Eastern Roman collectors like myself started with Roman Imperial coins. Many of us also believe the Roman Empire did not fall until 1453 when the Turks took its last capital. Its hard to believe a race that called themselves the Romans last for almost 1500 years. I got into Eastern Roman (Byzantine) coins because I liked the adventure of going into a barren field, we only have a few historians who focus on the coins for that time period. However these days the few collectors of Eastern Roman (Byzantine) coins prefer the large early issues of Justinian Follis , Anonymous follis of the 10th century and of course the beautiful abstract coins of the last rulers of Rome the Palaiologos dynasty. The other ones will eventually gain in popularity. I enjoyed sharing and participating in this competition. Thanks for the votes.
I once purchases an 1865 3 cent piece in XF condition (looked a lot like yours.) My girlfriend at the time was driving me around that day. I asked her to hold the coin in her purse (better than my pocket). The coin was inside a plastic flip, so I figured it would be safe in her purse during the short ride home. We approached a toll and she dug into her purse, grabbed some coins, and tossed them in. Got home and there was no 3 cent piece. When I asked her what happened, she told me she saw what looked like a 10 cent piece and needed the change, totally didn't put two and two together that it was the coin I'd just asked her to hold for me, took it out of the flip and threw it in the toll booth along with the other coins. Girlfriend didn't last long after that. To this day I still miss her a lot (the coin).
I don't see it as a East vs. West question but Early vs. Late. We have not had much shown from later period Western coins (Vandals or Charlemagne?) or non-Roman Easterns (Persian or Parthian?) from early years to compare. Comparing Byzantine to Rome is more than just geography.
Thank you @BenSi It's been a real pleasure to have our two coins challenging one another. I had the intuition of needing to play the bargain category, but didn't know it would be that tough : Pfew !!! what a sweat ! Thank you to all the voters and for the nice and/or off topic comments, that was fun and informative Q
