My wife and I visited Baker, Nevada last weekend to see the Perseid Meteor Shower. It was plenty dark on U.S. Route 50 (America’s Loneliest Road), but smoke from California and clouds limited viewing. I did see 8 meteors one night, or more than I have seen in years. On our way home, we visited Las Vegas. The Gold & Silver Pawn Shop had two or three cases of coins: US & Confederate notes; bullion; US coins (slabbed) and slabbed ancient coins! I have one of the coins from their case - Three grand seem a bit much for the coin, but it looks great in the case. Mine were a bit less. I have two VBs. The first one was a bit off center on the reverse, but in great condition. It my first ancient coin purchase in EF. I bought a second coin a bit later (from Ed Waddell) because it was centered better, but it was not fully struck. Both are shown below. Roman Republican Anonymous Victoriatus, 211-208 BC Obv - Laureate bust of Jupiter right; beaded border Rev - Victory standing right, crowning trophy; VB in field; ROMA in exergue. Crawford lists the mint as "Uncertain". Grueber gives Vibo in Bruttium as the mint. Most auction houses use uncertain, but others like Rome, Italy or southern Italy. Crawford 95/1b; Sydenham 113. Sear 51 (lumped with other coins with letters, no mint given) Grueber, Italy 233 - Annonymous authority in city of Vibo in Bruttium. The town chaned hands several times. It issued coins as a Greek colony from 379 - 276 BC. It became a Latin colony in 192 BC and issued coins with the legend VALENTIA. G&S has a lot of graded bullion. You can buy this one from their web site. Limited Memorial Edition - The Original Old Man Silver Medallion - $85.00 https://gspawn.com/coins-jewelry/coins-currency/ancient-coins/
Wow, even though he died they insist on making money off that shi* with a "memorial" issue? Fake autograph to boot. That's just sad.
Neat-O! I love it when coin shops carry good looking ancients (I like it even more when the poor coins aren't locked up behind plastic). That Galba Denarius is a beaut. As is that ATG tet. I'm a fan of Victoriatus coins myself. Though, 3Gs seems steeper than the cliffs of Thermapylae. Here is mine, that was mistakenly in a lot of Greek Coins that I bought on the very cheap Roman Republican Victoriatus Anonymous. 211-208 BCE AR (18mm, 3.42 g, 1h). Luceria L (second Crawford series). Luceria mint. Laureate head of Jupiter right, hair falling in three neat ringlets; all within bead and reel border / Victory standing right, crowning trophy; L between, ROMA in exergue. Crawford 97/1b
You've got an excellent pair of VB Victoriati there. I bought mine because I liked how well centered it was but it it is a bit worn and I hope to upgrade one of these days. One small note: all 4 VB Victoriati posted here are Crawford 95/1a. The 95/1b variety has a smaller, thinner head similar to 95/1c. Your victoriatus is actually a Spearhead symbol victoriatus from Apulia, Crawford 83/1a, like this:
@Ryro nice coin, looks like RS beat me to the attribution - spear series like this one from Agora sale 42 lot 118. The wings on Victory vary. I think this coin matches yours pretty well.
