With an oft-faked coin like that, I would buy it slabbed. After that, just crack it out if you want to keep it raw.

I know just a little about these coins so please pardon this question but, is the W and E in the word We suppose to be unlevel with each other? Also the "Y" in Liberty looks different.

Congrats! I finally bought my 1st S VDB yesterday. It took decades but I stepped-up. However, this type coin is one of the most counterfeited out there so please get it graded asap. To add a 2nd layer of authentic certification, my mint state coin is also CAC cert. Good luck and enjoy the process and the coin.

No I am not saying that. Based on the quality of the OP's images - the only definitive statement I can make is - when authenticating this coin - don't waste your time with the diagnostics for Obverse 1, 2 or 3. Because it is not one of those. Concentrate only on the diagnostics for obverse 4.

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

Curious to hear if the diagnostics for Obverse 4 check out.

Well I said that, because #4 was the only MM that is not slanted, (same as OP coin)
and while the date matched the overlay, the MM was not a complete match in the overlay. The dark area around the MM made me a little suspicious.

Based on the quality, glare, lighting artifacts and etc of the image - I can't say beyond a reasonable doubt that the overlay doesn't match.

I never buy "raw" key dates. I don't crack them out either. Buy slabbed, keep slabbed.

Another option is to visit a local coin store (LCS), and see if someone there has some insight into the authenticity of your new coin - they could also potentially facilitate it getting graded ASAP.

Used to be mine too. Sadly, now that I could afford one if I wanted.... being able to see the thing is hopeless as lousy as my eyesight has become.

Randy? Given my eye-site (present day without my 'cheaters') everything looks 'doubled die'..........:)

You may not like slabbed coins but you just posted a thread titled "bucket list coin" implying this is a large purchase for you and proceeded to wonder if it was real. Maybe be a little more open minded to buying a slabbed coin in special circumstances like this, you can crack it out after all and be confident your hard earned money went to something legitimate. When you don't have the skills to authenticate a frequently counterfeited coin the slabbed coins you hate become your friend if you'll have them even for just a day.
