I recently picked up these two Divus commemorative/resotration issues of Augustus. This one is fairly common and widely available, but been looking for a good deal on one and found it a couple weeks ago. Augustus, AE As, Struck under Tiberius 22-30 AD, Rome Mint Obverse: DIVVS•AVGVSTVS•PATER, head of Divus Augustus, radiate, left. Reverse: Ornate altar enclosure of the Ara Providentiae Augusti with double paneled door right, PROVIDENT below altar, S-C across field. References: RIC I (Tiberius) 81, Sear 1789, BMCRE 146 (Tiberius), Cohen 228. Similarly, I am just a big fan of Augustus bronze and when this (rough) coin appeared I wanted it and ended up getting a relatively good deal on it as well. It seems to be much more rare than the above one. It has a bit of a dark patina, so I have a set of photos angled to be able to see the detail better (especially on the obverse). It has some crusty sediment build up on the reverse that is hiding some of the beauty of Victory and the VESP legend. I had removed some of it from the obverse this morning on the crown of his head and around the 'VGVST' revealing the legend better. (I feel like there is a better coin lurking within wanting to come out!) Augustus, AE Dupondius, Struck under Titus 80-81 AD, Rome Mint Obverse: DIVVS AVGVSTVS PATER, head of Divus Augustus, radiate, left. Reverse: IMP T VESP AVG REST, Victory, draped, advancing left, carrying in right hand shield inscribed S P Q R, S-C across field. References: RIC II (Titus) 446, Sear 2580, Cohen 557, BMCRE 265 They both will go well alongside my other (smoothly worn) Titus Restitution As I got back in January: Augustus, Restoration issue by Titus, AE As, Rome Mint, Struck 80-81 AD. Obverse: DIVVS AVGVS-TVS PATER, head of Divus Augustus, radiate, left; star above. Reverse: IMP T CAES AVG RESTITVIT, Eagle perched facing on globe, head right, wings spread, S-C across field. References: RIC II (Titus) 462, Cohen 551, RCV I 2584 Evidently, everyone wanted to emulate good ol' Octavian and steal some of his "essence" or je ne sais quoi for themselves in the eyes of the people by issuing these coins. What other Divus Augustus coins do you have that I don't, but should? Do you have better versions of the ones above? I'd love to see 'em!
Very nice! I have been looking out for the first coin on your post. You are right they are very reasonably priced in pretty good condition. I really like yours... nice!!
Good looking and fun coins! I don't have anything better. But here is one I've got that had BD, and 3 months in hasn't shown a hint since cleaning:
Nice catches @Justin Lee Here's what I have that fits the bill As struck under the reign of Tiberius DIVVS AVGVSTVS PATER, Radiate head of Augustus left PROVIDENT, Altar, S C in field 11.02 gr Ref : Cohen #228, RCV #1789, RIC I # 81 Rome mint AD 250/251 DIVO AVGVSTO radiate head right CONSECRATIO Large altar 3.06 gr Ref : RIC IV # 78, Cohen # 578, RCV # 9459 Rome mint AD 250/251 DIVO AVGVSTO radiate head right CONSECRATIO Eagle facing with spred wings and head left 3.10 gr Ref : RIC IV # 77, Cohen # 577, RCV # 9458 Q
All nice coins with some very rare types, especially like your Provident great patina with good detail. I probably paid too much for mine a few years ago.
Very nice, I especially like the first one! I traded away a similar one about 20 years ago I'm still waiting for a replacement.
Neat pickups, Justin. I'd really like a restoration issue someday. Mine just has a boring old SC on the reverse, but I like the portrait and the chocolately patina. AUGUSTUS AE As. 10.88g, 30mm. Rome mint, AD 11-12. RIC 471. O: IMP CAESAR • DIVI • F • AVGVSTVS • IMP • XX, bare head of Augustus left. R: PONTIF M[AXIM • TRIB]VN • POT • XXXIIII • around large S C.
Beautiful coins, Q! Great detail on that altar! Mine leaves me wishing for greater relief, but I can't argue with the price. I love the black outlined by the red sand, @Bing!
Here's a new (and very green), non-restoration Divus Augustus with eagle reverse that I got last week. It looks a bit nicer in hand as you move it around in some nice light. Augustus, AE As Issued by Tiberius, Struck 34-37 AD, Rome mint Obverse: DIVVS AVGVSTVS PATER, Head of Augustus, radiate, left. Reverse: Eagle standing, front, on globe, with open wings, head turned right, S-C in field. References: RIC I (Tiberius) 82 Size: 25mm, 10.8g And here it is reflecting some more of the light: I do have to say that the artistry on this coin in the portrait and eagle rendering are among the nicer ones of this type. https://www.acsearch.info/search.ht...s=1&thesaurus=1&order=0¤cy=usd&company=
