Daughter advise

I could use some help with a question I had from my seven year old daughter. We do the coin stuff together, i.e. sort the wheat backs, look through change and rolls. She recieved 100.00 from her grandfather for Christmas. She wants to buy one nice coin. Not spread her wealth out on a few coins, she wants just one coin. What do you think would be a good coin for a seven year old to invest her money in. I'm just new enough to collecting that I don't have a good answer. She is sitting here with me while I'm typing and will be waiting for your opinions. Thanks from Elizabeth

What is her general interest? Is she more interested in Cents or Dollars, Halves or Dimes. etc...

There are many very coins that you may be able to get for your money.
However, please do NOT consider it an investment, look at it as a hobby, and if oyu make some money all the better.
[kind of the way that my account at the broker is currently going.]

This is truly a hobby and sure we spend money and (hopefully) make a few bucks at the same time.
But, I remember buying a lot of Barber dimes, quarters and half dollars in from 1991 to 1998 and they rarely moved up at the time. It was only with the intro of the states quarters that they (eventually) started to increase in value.

Okay, enough with the stupid advice:
Go for a nice (preferably slabbed) 1909 S Lincoln Cent. You should be able to get one in good or VG for that money.

My first-born daughter is named Elizabeth. She's grown up now !

What do you like ? Small coins or larger ones ? New ones or older ones ? Copper ones or shiny silver ones ?

 

A 1/10th ounce gold american eagle would be my choice and it should hold it's value with the way gold has been going up.

 

Go for some ancient Greek silver - even if you don't collect them, they make a nice centerpiece or side-show for any collection.

 

2006 W American Silver Eagle. PCGS or NGC MS-69 can be found for around $100. Nice and big and a modern key date.

 

A nice uncirculated Indian Head cent would get my vote.

 

The highest grade Morgan you can get for your money slabbed by PCGS or NGC - or compare the slabbed Morgan to a raw Morgans at a dealer you can trust - then maybe a raw Morgan in an Air-tite container.

Another suggestion is go to a local coin show and let her pick out the type of coin she likes and again get the best you can for your money.


Make sure she is happy with what she gets.

This would be my vote too. Women love gold and it doesn't matter how old they are. :thumb: The coin is small so it should be in an airtite or other holder so it doesn't get lost or damaged.

 

Try getting the 2008 canadian proof set. It is only 89.99.

 

Id say either buy an Uncirculated slabbed 1909 VDB wheatie, or get a nice 1931S. The 31S is a key date that I think will go up alot in value. But like Hobo said, buy an uncirculated Indian Head, those are beautiful coins to have.

What counts is what she likes.

Take her to a coin show*. Failing that, maybe browse a Red Book.

Here is my suggestion. Stop and wait for a while. Go to a coin store or coin show preferably. Look all over the place. If you have a Red Book, go through that. Not sure how that thing goes about fools rush in where wise men fear to go. Regardless, if you take your time you may find a coin or coins that are well worth what you really want. At a young age it is difficult to figure out what to do with so much to choose from. Hey wait, that pertains to us old people also.
The main thing is to listen to adults but as most kids do, do as you want. It's your money.

 

I agree with Treashunt! A 1909-S Lincoln Cent would be a great start on a nice Lincoln Cent Collection! Besides, the Key Dates and Semi-Key Date Lincolns have soared in value over the past 8 months and although the rises may stall or even go down some for awhile, I expect them to gradually climb. Just look at the 1914-D which was selling for $200 or less in VF-20 some 8 months ago, is now selling on an average of $340 to $380.

If she likes the wheats like my daughter does, or indians, let her get a nice better date, slabbed in the best grade she can afford. I personally would get a 31S in vf/xf or a nice ms60 1864 bronze, something like that.

Here's a suggestion. Get a 1/10th ounce of gold like suggested, but to make it even more special, get your birth year. That'd be something really neat, and something you will really enjoy IMO. :thumb: Most importantly though, enjoy whatever you buy, and have fun. :thumb:

now that suggestion i really like if you give up coins inthe future you will not lose the value of the gold. If you dont want to pay the premium get the coin from the mint but you will lose ou ton your birth year. I would recommend getting the proof as those are prettier

 

I'd go big silver. The nicest morgan or peace dollar I could get. My daughters like the walking liberty half dollar, reminds them of a princess. I agree get what she likes. Open up the red book together and spend some time looking at coins, (together).

 

Hey Liz....

Look at a nice CHCU or Gem New York star $20 note. I bet you can find one from 1977 and up for that $100.00
