@Justin Lee That is a beautiful coin. Private sale or auction? The strike is very nice, strong detail and legends. I don’t own a Siliqua yet but your coin is bringing back that itch! Congrats on a great buy.
Congratulations on your purchase. May you always delight in this one. I remember when I got my first siliqua. It was also a Constantius II, as I recall, and I think I still have it. It made me feel like some kind of arrival had taken place for me, but I'm really not sure why. Eventually it was joined by others, and they came to stay. My avatar is a siliqua from my collection. It synthesizes the things that most attract me to the collecting of Roman Imperial.
Thanks! Was won in an auction. In my research it seems to me that the siliqua (and solidus) were struck with a bit more attention paid to quality than the AEs (nicely centered, etc).
This is the version from Thessalonika. This is Arles. It seems there was a huge issue of siliquae for the Votis XXX period.
It's nice to have a bit of silver from this bronze-heavy period. I don't have a Constantius II, but here's my darkly toned Julian II siliqua. JULIAN II, as Caesar AR Siliqua. 1.89g, 17.3mm. Arelate mint, AD 360-361. RIC 264. O: DN IVLIANVS NOB CAES, bareheaded, draped and curaissed bust right. R: VOTIS V MVLTIS X in four lines within wreath; TCON in exergue.
I used to have this one but no longer I think I might only have one siliqua left in my collection (I used to have a few.... sigh) which is this Julian II, Lugdunum, VOTIS V (East Harptree Hoard)
Congrats on some really beautiful coins, Everyone who shared. It is very nice to see the VOT designs in silver after so many times in bronze.
