This was in the lot I bought. 38 of the 48 have been attributed, so I am down to the coins with hard-to-read names and portraits I do not recognize. I will porobably be posting them as I give up on them. This is the first of the ones I have given up on: Thank you for your help!
My first thought was Gallienus (due to crappy mint job) then Postumus. But I have my doubts about the latter attribution.
From the guesses, we petty much agree on a Gallic emperor. My first thought was Victorinus but we might as well guess Domitian II or Laelianus. Isn't it maddening when all you can read is PFAVG?
It basically boils down to what this letter is. It is either an E or an L. If the former, then it could be Tetricus, but the beard is not the right style. If the latter, then it could be Lealianus, but the reverse does not match the known examples. It can’t be Victorinus, Domitianus, or Postumus because of that letter. Could it be an example of a previously-unknown emperor? Could it be a barbarous issue? Who knows?
I know... that rules him out as being likely. It seems Tetricus is far more likely, but the examples I have seen have a a very different beard style. On Tetricus’ coins, the beard follows the chin line. On my example, the beard just falls off the face.
I thought Tetricus as soon as I saw the portrait combined with the poor production quality typical of Gallic Empire/Crisis. Could be totally wrong but too thin faced for Postumus, wrong shape for Gallienus and just unlikely for Laelianus to begin with.
