Question on 1942-D Jefferson RPM's? (Additional Photo's Added) I have seen pictures of a 1942-D over horizontal D and a 1942-D/D Southeast at the varietynickel.com site. But I have a coin that looks like a D/D southwest. Has anyone seen a listing or description for a 1942-D Jefferson Nickel D/D Southwest in any of the reference books? (Additional Photo's Added on 02/08/05) Thanks, Charlie
Welcome Charlie!!! I am rdunnit on Collector's Universe as well. I have a picture of a 1942-D Jefferson that I have that has a minor RPM that is triple punched. I think on Jason's site he mentions that a lot of years there were minor RPM's and they are common. Most of the varieties in the reference books that I own show RPM's that are dramatically repunched. I love Jefferson varieties and especially love it when a new variety is discovered. Do you have a picture of the 42-D that you own?
Hi Robert, I just took some pictures of my coin, but most didn't turn out. Here's is the best of the lot. I will try again to get better pictures. I looks to me like my coin is just like yours. I also included some pictures of a 1946-D that I thought might be a rpm.
I hope you don't mind but I ran your pictures through photoshop and enlarged and sharpened them. The 42-D looks like an unlisted RPM to me but I am far from an expert. The 46-D looks like an RPM-004 that is listed in James Wiles "The Jefferson Nickel RPM Book". If you don't have a copy yet it is a must have. I also bought the "The Jefferson Nickel RPM Book Update: 2001-2002" and "The Best Of The Jefferson Nickel Doubled Die Varieties. Another book that I would like to get next is "The Jefferson Nickel Analyst". I also bought a Digital Blue QX3 computer microscope awile back. I paid less than $50 shipped from Sam's Club online. They don't list the microscope anymore but I have seen a lot on Ebay. It used to be made by Intel but the company now is called Digital Blue. I know there are other microscopes available but generally they are more expensive. The QX3 takes pretty decent images. Anyway here are the Photoshopped images that I made of your pictures. Robert
It appears that your 42-D Mint mark is a minor serif split. Although technically an RPM it would be too minor to be recognized in the "text books". Your 46-D appears it may be RPM-4 but I would need to see a more detailed close-up.
I am going to get one of the toy QX3 Digital Blue Computer microscopes soon and will take try to take some better pictures of the mintmark. Charlie
I got my Qx5 and took these pictures of my 1942-D and 1946-D: I am having trouble getting the lighting just right and the Qx5 seems to have a very small focus range, so it is hard to get all the picture in focus. Any suggestions on solving this problem would be appreciated.
