silly idea for replacement of the penny

How about little tiny books with one cent fractional currency. Each the size of a small postage stamp.

Id love to make a You Tube video of someone doing a "public survey" out on the street, trying to convince citizens that this is coming!

A silly idea only a tad sillier than doing away with the cent and nickel, and introducing a tiny aluminum half dime with Reagan on it! (but Ill bet the Govt. would save zillions!)

not so bad idea actually, but you'd have to have alot of them just to make a purchase. and could you imagine all the trees that would have to be cut down for paper?

 

This is an old idea that actually became a reality 146 years ago in 1862. It didnt go over well then and I dont believe it will now either.

I'm sure it would be fun to get the opinion of the general public on this one. Kind of like when Jay Leno goes into the streets of NYC and asks questions. I'd predict there will be alot of disapproval. I wonder who we could get to be our "roving reporter". lol...

 

replacement of the cent

funny that this was brought up. yesterday i received my new issue of coinage and it has an article about the lincolns being made of steel with copper coloring for 2009. anyone seen it?

 

Might be viable, main problem with the 43's was that they plated the steel, then stamped the planchets, so the edges were 'raw'. That was the open door for corrosion. Looks like they have overcome that with the zinkers, since the copper plates all the way around. Copper does form a good bond with steel, when antique auto bumpers are rechromed, they are taken to raw steel, then copper plated, which forms a footing for the chrome.

I just want to see that 'billy mays' beard gone from abe and the ol' original 09 head put back. Steel took a good impression, but I have heard it was tough on the coining machinery.

 

Hasn't stopped the Canadian Mint from getting some Foreign Coin contracts for their Cent composition.

I just don't see why the US Mint either buy or form some sort of manufacture partnership with the Canadian Mint and make cents that way? The Canadian Mint could sublease the process to the US Mint, and as part of the partnership condition, the US Mint handles some Foreign Coin contracts for the Canadian Mint.

 

I thought they only did that for the Bullion Coins?

 

This is correct.
I work with a man that used to work for one of their suppliers.
He mainly worked with the creation of the cent planchets.

Aluminum bronze is another good coining alloy

 

They will be plastic soon.
They will probably look similar, but it will have a shiney coated plastic exterior.
This is not a fact, just a feeling I have.
