Can anyone tell me why this is one of the higher priced Eagles? I've seen it going at close to a hundred or over, not sure why though, but I managed to scoop one up at $56 the other day
Quantity minted and demand. What I found on ebay was (expecially with silver eagles) if you showed patience you could usually get a decent deal. By the way are you talking proof or uncirculated? Was it graded or raw? It seems both of these seem to going for more than when I was actively searching for PCGS graded coins. It looks like I spent about $110 for both of my 69's - this was way back in 2001 or 2002. I am still looking for that 95W.
Its the Uncirculated 96, I just saw it on ebay and it was ending quickly so I scooped it up, I'm planning on trying to get the Proof ones after I fill my uncirculated book (I'm still pretty much a newbie) BTW, I keep my uncirculated Eagles in a Littleton album, is the best way to store them? I was planning on trying the Airtites for the Proofs
Actually it depends on who you ask - my personal preference is airtites, but that is just me. I know a lot of people keep their eagles in albums. If you like the album then keep them in it - just remember they might tone some. The proofs will probably already be in direct fit airtites - as they came from the mint. When I started I already had all the mint issued proofs, but I decided to collect a PCGS graded 69 set in both proof and uncirculated. Even though plenty of the coins are available it took me about a year to have the complete set - minus the 95w proof. Enjoy collecting them, take your time to get the coins you like best. Have fun with the hobby - and hang around the board, this is a great place to learn. And don't be shy about posting pictures of your coins - I enjoy seeing all of them. So welcome aboard! Most important have fun!
It is the lowest mintage of the uncirulated American Silver Eagle prior to the introduction of the 2006w Silver eagle with the burnished finish.. I believe the mintage of the 1996 uncirulated silver eagle was something like 3.6 million.
In 95 and 96 the mint put out a boat load of Commemoratives. With the Olympic deal and the others, it must have been 25 or 30 in just dollar coins. I wonder if this took away from the number of folks that bought the Silver Eagle in 96. It was a crazy time at the mint.
That is becayse they are .999 silver, and the pure silver tarnishes more quickly than the alloyed version does.
Think you got a great buy if the coin is MS65 or better. I got mine for 36 years ago and at the time I questioned the high cost with the coin dealer I purchased it from, actually over time, the complete BU set to date, 2004. The explanation I got was: A large quantity had been destroyed for some reason, on purpose or accidental, I can't remember the specifics. This dealer is an honorable guy and has been in the business a long time. I can't always afford to get what I want in his shop, but have always gotten what I need. Then again I could be totally wrong. Great buy...HOLD ON TO IT! I'd like to have a whole roll of them. ha ha!
The 96 coin looks very overpriced to me. I bought one for $8 a number of years ago, but I wouldn't buy one now.
It's my sin's birth year (you already know my daughter's!). Before the runup in gold prices a 1996 1/10 ounce gold eagle was looking like a better deal than the 1996 ASE...
