Morgan dollar grading

Discussion in 'US Coins Forum' started by grading an inheritance, Aug 8, 2018.

  1. As I have said in other threads, I am trying to grade my grandpa's coin collection so we can divide it between my family and my uncle. I think that I have developed a decent grasp of grading. Here are some Morgans and my best guesses as to what they might grade. Please give feedback and, again, thanks for the help.

1878 CC (thinking its probably MS but no idea where it might fall)

    1879 CC (probably G-4, or maybe AG-3)

1889 (thinking probably MS maybe 63?)

    1897 (maybe MS-62?)

1898 (my grandpa had written BU on the flip, I'm thinking maybe MS-62 or 63)

    1900 O (maybe MS-63?)

Why do you think the first coin is MS?

I'd grade most of those as MS63. If I were you I'd try to keep the CC ones for myself ;). You've probably learned by now that anything with a CC mintmark is a rarer date.

Btw, www.pcgs.com/photograde is a very good website to help with grading.

    josh's coins likes this.
  6. Well, I mostly used the book linked by josh's coins and I am not seeing wear in the places listed for AU. If you are seeing wear that I am not, please point it out to me.
