I think I was lucky to aquire this coin, But not real sure of that yet. 2017 Red Book lists the 1909-S at $100.00 in Good condition. USA Coinbook says $101.00. Other sources are close to that amount. I understand the Error "VS" MS-70 collector thing. One says "Way cool" the other says "It's Damaged". I think it does have a kinda "Unique" appeal to it . And I suppose it could have been a VBD, but there is no way to tell. I'm posting this coin to ask if you think that the Error adds to the value Or detracts from the value. And if you have opinions on value I would like to hear them also. All comments welcome.
To be honest. I considered damaged more than an error on a keydate. Usually, I'm looking for a problem free on a keydate. With that type of error and wear are considered damaged and decrease the values, at least for me. Well, it just only my opinions. For the error coin, I will only purchase for its error type. But, thats a nice coin you have there.
From the pics it looks more like a little acid ate the coin away. Shame about it in that condition, otherwise worn but nice.
Generally, I would want key date/mintmarks without die cracks, laminations, stains, defective planchets, or those with details grades (e.g. '09 S-VDB cent, 1916 D Mercury dime, 1893 S Morgan, etc.) HOWEVER, it would be cool to have an off-center, broadstruck, off-metal, or wrong planchet error for a variety, like an off-center 1955 double die with a Full date or a 3 legged Buffalo nickel stamped on a cent planchet. I would imagine those might be sky-high premiums.
Did not know that, but it makes sense. Because keys are many times lowest mintage ones and having one that is problem free (which for many includes 'errors') is desired.
