As I said in my trade dollar thread, I finally got time to get some good pictures of my grandpa's collection and I have the afternoon off so am trying to hone in my grading abilities...Please offer your opinions on these coins and let me know if I am being too optimistic, pessimistic, or doing half decently... 1921 high relief (hard for me to grade as it is the only high relief...I'm thinking maybe VF-30) 1923 (maybe a low MS?) 1925S toned strip on both sides (maybe EF-40) I'm including 2 pictures of the obverse as the toning on it was hard to capture... There are two 1926 coins that I took pictures of because I'm curious about thoughts on them. The first one has more luster but looks like it might be worn ever so slightly more than the second one. The second one is a little tarnished but the details look a little sharper to my eye. I'm curious how people think they would grade... 1926 #1 (I'm thinking maybe AU-55) 1926 #2 (I'm hopefully thinking maybe a low MS? It looks better in hand than the picture shows) more to follow...
I'm also posting 2 1927 Peace Dollars. I posted one of them in my introductory thread, but am including it in here as well to get further opinions... 1927 #1 (my grandpa had labeled it MS 60-63 but people thought it looked dipped) 1927 #2 (I'm thinking maybe VF-20 or VF-30) 1928S (it has a gash in the forehead but otherwise is a pretty nice coin...I'm unsure how the gash would effect grading...Maybe knock it down to VF-30 or does it essentially disqualify it?) 1934S (maybe VF-20) thanks in advance for any input
I agree with green that the 1934 is XF. Also the 1927's seem to be polished or have light cleaning. Otherwise I think you were pretty accurate.
I'm seeing what look like scratches from harsh cleaning on the 34-S. A shame, too, as it looks like it still has luster around the edges...
That's the condition of the coin. The luster is in the protected areas, and I see some light hairlines but not any deep scratches.
