I have a $5 dollar gold 1988. It has a die crack on the obverse. Is it unusual enough to have it graded? Daveyg
Dave, If it is a true die crack, I would say it is unusual. What sort of 1988 is it? Olympic? AGE? Gold should NOT be cracking dies.
Okay, since it's a proof, it was struck at least twice, probably exactly twice. That means something MIGHT have gotten between the dies between strikes. In order to be a die crack, it would have to be raised, not recessed. Can you tell?
Hi There, welcome to coin talk. Cointalk observers the coin closely to tell what type of error it is. In order to do that we need the pictures. If you don't mind the pictures would be helpful. (when you can get to it) Thanks, Noah
Well, it's not a tough date for the series, so that argues against grading. Do you expect to specialize in these kinds of errors? If so, and you want to keep them ultra-nice for the long term, maybe slabbing is not so much an over-expense. It's a tough call.
