My grandfather gave this Wayte Raymond green Roosevelt dimes coin album to my grandmother for Christmas of 1953. The album paper had something in it which colored the contact sides of the dimes to almost black.
High sulfur content paper. By the way, I did a quick lookup on that patent number. It appears to be wrong.
Early paper albums like that had sulfur in them. It is not uncommon for them to have toned coins. It's too bad they turned black, but the album is still pretty darn cool.
I picked up a green wayte raymond album for washington quarters. Mine even has holes punched through it like this one. I cant remember what date the album stops at but its probably from the 1950s as well. I never did put any coins in it. I definitely need to some day
