OK, looks like I've got the fever. :rolling: I picked these up at a coin dealer 3 days ago. I'll tell you what I paid for them after a few guesses are made: AND: Thanks for any input!
I got all 5 for $73. Being a newbie the New York FRB notes were unlike anything I'd ever seen (they are probably "common") so I grabbed them. Anyway, so continues the beginning of my currency collection. Thanks for looking.
Hello Bigswick... Nice pickup for small change! Note#1 is a $1 Silver Cert and I estimate that note to be XF-AU @ ~$24-38 Note#2 is 1928 E $2 note I estimate at VG-F @ ~ $10-$11 Note#3 is a 1928 F Wide (variety 1) I think it is in (Fine) . To confirm this look on the note for the following #s Front plate# 628-683....if your plate number falls in with these then it worth about 17$. The small stain on the back and the folds/creases may lower it to VG If it is Back Plate# 2067-2096 it is worth about $50...the pics are too small for me to see, so check it out. That would make it a Wide variety 2. The third variety is a "Narrow" which your note seems not to be. The $5 New York note is VG-F at ~ 25.00 The $10 New York is VF @ 35.00 So all in all you did pretty well. Glad to see you got the fever... Thanks for sharing. $$$$ estimates come from Schwartz/Lindquist 7th Edition BTW...everyones collecting basis is different but something to consider is not how many notes you have, but the quality of your notes so that they willl attract future buyers more so than quantity. This is my own personal belief and in no way do I mean to insult or talk down to any specific collector on how they choose to collect. There are some notes that just do not come in flavors above XF! Just soemthing to think about as you dabble into this new venture. Best of Luck to you...this very same thing was said to me years ago from some pretty lofty players in the Industry. RickieB
for $73 i think you did pretty darn good!!! RickeyB has a point about quality versus quantity - although my collection and his are on different ends of the spectrum lol gotta love the shift onthat silver cert welcome to the world of paper money collecting
Rickie, Thanks for the opinions, tips, and advice. I really appreciate your time and effort! :thumb: I went to the coin shop just to get some east coast state quarters from my album. It has become sort of an annual pilgrimage for me whenever I go back to Virginia. When I walked in I saw the owner had out stacks and stacks of currency. I started looking through the ones, fives, and tens and grabbed a few that appealed to me. They were the nicest of the lot, though maybe he didn't have a huge selection by comparison. He had a $10 Gold Certificate (I'd never seen one) that was really rough for $70. It was turning black and looked like someone ran it through a washing machine. I passed on it. Daggarjon- I too like that Silver Certificate. It is really, really clean. I thought it was the best one he had out of maybe 100 or so. The shift was just a little bonus. In addition to the notes pictured I also got about 8-10 really nice Silver Certificates from my mother. Several of them are almost sequential with just a few numbers off in the serial numbers. I managed to get everything home (along with the 1869 and 1923 $1 bills) in my carry-on bags without hurting anything. I set it all out a couple of nights ago and took a look. I'll post some scans of the Silver Certificates soon. If things keep up like this I'm going to have to lose my car habit!
BigsWick, I like them all especially the funny back. One of my all time favorite notes! Nice job. clembo
Not yet. I'm at work for the next couple of hours. I'll look when I get home and let you know what I find.
close.. the front plate is within the range RickeyB mentioned, but not the back plate. I still dont know why that particular front plate/back plate range is so much more valuable..... does this mean i need to start paying attention to plate #'s? i do track alot of them in my database, but only out of curiosity, not for anything else.
Dagger... my only reasoning behind that is the varieties (3) exist. 2 wide and 1 narrow I suspect the $50 note is the least printed in that variety...only a guess. RickieB
no worries RickeyB, what you pointed out was completely unknown to me. I do hope to pick up on those types more however! Last night i ordered 3 more books, and some supplies. So hopefully a couple of the books will help open doors to the areas you mentioned so far, my list of books to buy is down to 6 ... so far
Very nice notes man! Sounds like you did pretty good, that first one really catches my eye for some reason, nice. :thumb: Phoenix
