This is the coin that must drive graders craaaazzzyyyy! Any thoughts on grade? Going out next week with a few others to PCGS.
You might want to reconsider sending that coin, it appears to have been cleaned. I think it likely it will end up in a body bag.
Well, going by the Bonedigger Standard it appears to be very shiny VF-25. Definitely 2x2 flip material. Take Care Ben
Under the loupe the very very weak strike shows much better, also under natural light the color is less red than in the photo, more to the orange. The edges of this coin are very square, not rounded like a circulated coin. Ive went to 50X and really cannot see any hairline scratch patterns anywhere.

ambro: I happen to agree with Frank (Frank's have to stick together). Sorry, but it also (still) appears to have been cleaned in the past. (Also, listen to Ben & Frank, they are excellent with spotting cleaned coins. Not kissing up, just a fact. )
So...the winner for most difficult coin to grade...the 22 weak D! That last pic is actually too much on the blue, since the paper it was on was white! We go from vg to au.....I think higher, compares to the ms63rb's on the heritage auction site. Personally, all these 22's should have been melted down back in the day..and the govt splurged on some new dies. But, Im glad they didnt, it adds a lot of variety to the lincolns, for sure! The Water Sports gentleman, with the aforementioned MS63RB example on the registry, took a look at this just now and gave it either an MS63RB or an MS62RB. He has a great grading set there, very interesting how bad these coins look. http://www.pcgs.com/setregistry/showcase.aspx?sc=164 Im glad the rest of the coins in general dont pose this grading difficulty!!
Looks like there is definete wear there, along with it being cleaned. I'd say EF-45 details, IMO. Still, a neat coin to say the least. :thumb: Phoenix
I do not know what you guys are doing to get a "white background. His was done on photoshop. It almost looks like a normal coin.
Phoenix beat me to the punch. EF-45 cleaned or dipped. I'd still put it in my book, let us know how it comes back.
1922-Ds are very tough to grade due to their poor strikes. From my understanding, grading companies typically grade these from the reverses, giving less attention to the obverses. I think the coin has AU details and has been cleaned.
