Anything "special" about these 64 / 68 Kennedy halves?

    Hi All

I hate to ask this question - but here is the context.

New collector here - Started by recently inheriting my grandma's silver change collection - and by collection I just mean she -starting in the 70s - just threw silver change she got into a jug for safe keeping.

By the time I got it it was a few hundred coins - Mostly dimes and halves.

There were a few hundred Kennedy halves from 64 on - but from 1964 specifically there were probably 60, and from 65-70 probably another 30-40

They were all circulated - except when looking through these two jumped out - they like, GLOWED, in comparison to the rest. So wondering if they were taken maybe from a proof set, or maybe just happened to be thrown into the jug before they were too circulated - I don't know... There was some strange stuff in the collection too like 1850s large cents, etc... So who knows.

Just curious since these stood out so much.

    Thanks!

look for any 1970-Ds - they're worth a bit more than the common 40% halves

They appear to both be nice strikes and not "messed with" so put 'em on the "keeper" pile.

One thing different from modern Kennedy's is the 1964 is 90% silver and the 1968 is 40% silver. After 1970 silver was no longer used for circulating Kennedy halves.

After 69 silver was no longer used for circulating halves. The 70 was silver, but it was not made for circulation.

If they have the letter D on them then they are the circulating type and not proofs. Welcome to Coin Talk . Dillan

Yes but the 70'D was only released in UC mint sets.

The 64 has a D but not the 68. So the 68 is a proof?

All proofs from '68 onward will have an 'S' mint mark under the bust of Kennedy, and have mirrored fields. The two that glowed look like they are uncirculated - the luster is what makes them shiny. Fairly common, but still worth a bit more than the circulated pieces.

I was going by the fact he said no mint mark. I saw the D later.

Both coins are minted in Denver and are not proof. They are very nice UNC coins though. 1964 is the only year that the Kennedy half was struck as a proof in Philly. 1965-1967 SMS halves were struck in Philly as well, but those are not quite proofs. 1968 and up proofs were struck in San Fransisco and would have the S mintmark.

If you enjoy these...then try finding ones in a bit nicer condition...you may enjoy the hobby of coin collecting as I have.

Think philly was still minting 67 dates in 1968. Only D+S's minted with 1968 dates at Denver and San Francisco. Not sure what philly was doing that year as far as half dollars go. @V. Kurt Bellman

Philly? In calendar 1968? Halves? If any at all, they were still striking 1967’s.

In 1965 - 67 they didn't use mintmarks no matter where they were struck, but they were only struck at all three mints in 1965 and 66. ALL 1967 halves made for circulation were struck in Denver. Philadelphia struck no half dollars from 1966 til 1971.
