We have a coin show this weekend in Houston, Tx: Bellaire Coin Club Coin, Stamp, & Collectible Show Aug 4th - 5th, 2018 Arabia Shrine Center 10510 Harwin Drive (at BW8 and just south of Westpark toll road) Houston, TX 77036 Several dealers have ancient coins. A couple of my favorites are Nilus and Pegasi. Our local bookseller, Bruce, has a table at the show. I need to pick one of the following coins. 1. The first one is a Spanish coin from about 150 BC. I do not know much about these. The prices at auction vary wildly, but the price seems about right. 2. Number 2 is RR The Iberian is probably rarer, in a bit better condition and costs about twice as much. I am not familiar with Iberian denarii. I am afraid to go down the Spanish path & will probably go with the RR. Which would you pick?
If it was me, probably the Celtic denarius from Iberia. The theme is a little more interesting and it is a nice coin with superb style, well centered, etc.
I think it does - the horseman types are very common indeed. The Dioscuri type, also left facing, also with this especial Celtic style, is a far nicer coin than essentially any of the horseman types. I would choose the illustrated Iberian Dioscuri type over the Considia any day. I would choose the Considia over a generic ordinary style Iberian horseman type any day.
Well sure. Unless he knows one is going to be there I wouldn't expect to see one by chance and is why I suggested others.
Hi @rrdenarius I'd probably go with #1. I'm headed to the show now and am excited to talk with Nick and sift through some ancients at the Pegasi table. Last time I saw Pegasi was last year in October when I picked up this AIII Tet: Macedonian Kingdom, Alexander III (the Great), 336 - 323 BC. AR Tetradrachm. Amphipolis Mint, early posthumous issue, Struck c. 323-320 BC. Obv: Head of Alexander right in the guise of Herakles wearing lion-skin headdress. Rev: ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ AΛEΞANΔPOY; Zeus seated left, holding eagle and sceptre; Macedonian helmet in left field. 25 mm, 16.88g. Toned aXF Cf. Price 113 Ex. Stacks, June 14 1993; Lot 62 Ex. Pegasi Numismatics I'd love to meet you today.
I actually like the Roman Republic better. The reverse is nothing of great interest but I like the portrait of Venus on it.
A few more pics from the show: PCGS submission tool. Bruce had an old (1860) book on Roman History by Francis Hobler. It was only $120 and can be found on line here: https://archive.org/details/cu31924092532948 Nick of Pegasi had an interesting RR coin with an old ticket. We wondered if anone has a list of theirs?
@rrdenarius I sure enjoyed meeting you today and sorry I had to cut out before you finished with the children's auction. I'm glad I got to see your pick from the original post and I won't spoil it for the others here and leave it to you to spill the beans. I only picked up one coin today though definitely not from lack of want as I saw a number of coins to lust after. @TIF made me get this one: Sicily SYRACUSE time of TIMOLEON (344-336BC) Æ Trias, Helmeted head of Athena, Rev Hippocamp
The Houston Chronicle had a write-up in their on line edition. https://www.houstonchronicle.com/ne...eneration-doesn-t-13132468.php#photo-15967909
