The first thing you do when looking at the abuse we put coins through, is JUST throw them in the junk Pile. Honestly you are gonna find more PMD than actual MS or AU coins, Forget errors or variety's.

    First off welcome to CT!!

Now what you saw on your coin and the reason it looked that way is due to what was gouged on the coin. Someone literally folded the rim over onto both sides of the coin. Normally the rim is slightly raised above the field just enough that if gouged the right way it can overlap the sides of the coin. You can see this in the photo of the reverse of the coin. Look at the rim above the word Mount and you can see the rim is folded over and above "More" of Rushmore the rim looks normal and slightly raised.

Whenever a poster starts by say "This is not PMD," they've already made up their mind and it just a waste of time to attempt to correct them.

Go find that damaged quarter, put it next to your keyboard for easy reference and visit this Wikipedia page for a general overview of mint made error types - compare your coin with the photos to familiarize yourself with mint made vs. man made errors.

Hope this helps to clear up any confusion ;)

Except in this case. She has already admitted it was pmd and that she needed to learn more. Not a waste of time at all.

@Pennie Lira ...if you haven't already, go to doubleddie.com and select "How dies are made". It will teach you that the damage you see on the coins you find could not have happened before it left the Mint...Spark

Piling on is rather easy. Answering a question correctly and shutting up seems to be very hard to do. If someone has explained why it was considered PMD , there is no reason for continuing to argue. The purpose of the forum though is not to convince the poster you are right and they are wrong, it is to present possible correct answers. Post #42 deserves the best answer as Montcollector took the time to give a probable answer. Play nice. Jim
