Looking to add an early italian Renaissance piece to my educational collection to pair with Dante's Inferno. These two are available at present. I know which one I prefer but would love input from the peanut gallery. Both coins are from the reiign of Venetian ruler Giovanni Soranzo with whom Dante stayed during his exile from Florence and writing of the Inferno. Coin 1 Coin 2 ..... Now to complicate things with a late addition (with bad seller photos to boot!)... Coin 3
Here are the asking price for all three coins. Coin 1: $60 Coin 2: $53 Coin 3: $100 (but it is part of a 4 coin lot...I would sell the other three to make up the cost)
I like the look of #2 enough that I would probably stick with that one. #3 is intriguing but they seem to be inferior pieces so you may have trouble moving them.
Well, I decided to purchase the 4 coin lot and see what I can make of the other three in individual resale. Heck, if they bring enough $ I can always purchase coin #2 (admittedly a superior coin) and resell the fourth original coin. This is for my "Coins in the Classroom" project, so the utmost quality is not necessary...though I'd like the best specimen I can afford. My students will be handling the coins, so I do need to be reasonable. Thanks for the input. I'll post new photos when the coins arrive. They shipped today from Greece.
For me, this is a very easy choice. The second coin clearly has Superior original toning. The eye appeal of that piece is well above the other choices.
Coin 2 has a deep gash that might come all the way through. Coin 1 missing most of the inscription on the left. I’d go w 3.
I'm growing a bit partial to #3 a bit myself. I agree that #2 has some potential damage but seems to have less wear. #3 (and the lot it is a part of) should arrive tomorrow. I'll post better photos when they get here.
The coins have arrived from Greece. I'm quite pleased with how they appear in hand. My photos are posted below: Coin 1 Coin 2 Coin 3 Coin 4
