This has been a good year for Greek Tetradrachm adding, something I have trouble doing with my budget. Picked this up in April. Antiochos I Soter (281 - 261 B.C.) SELEUKID EMPIRE AR Tetradrachm O: Diademed head right R: Apollo Delphios seated left on omphalos; monograms to outer left and right. BAΣIΛEΩΣ ANTIOXOY within. Seleukeia on the Tigris mint 29mm 16.78g SC 379
Very nice tet @Mat I'm a big fan of it. An interesting fact about Antiochus is that he was half Iranian, as his mother was a Sogdian princes that his father had married when Alexander gave his general Eastern princesses in Babylon. Here is one of his tets. Antiochus I Soter AR Tetradrachm. 281-261 BC Seleucia on the Tigris Obv: Diademed head of Antiochus I Soter facing right. Rev: ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΑΝΤΙΟΧΟΥ, Apollo seated left on omphalos, holding arrow and resting w/ hand on grounded bow; monograms in outer l. and r. fields.
Congrats ! Awesome coins of the Seleucids!! How do you guys know which Antiochus is on the coin? Some look very similar,... at least to me. For example, I have this one and attributed it to Antiochus II Theos, but seeing your coins I am not sure who is on mine ?????? He looks also like Antiochus I Tetradrachm 28 mm, 10.87 g, Seleukeia on the Tigris, 261-256 BC Obv.: Diademed head of Antiochus right Rev.: BAΣIΛEΩΣ ANTIOXOY Apollo Delphios seated left on omphalos, examining arrow held in right hand and resting left hand on grounded bow; MHTO monogram in outer left field, and ΩΛT monogram in outer right field.
That’s a great coin @Mat! I only have bronze from the Seleukids. Waiting to find a nice silver at a nice price. Most are overpriced in my opinion. Here are my twelve little bronzes. I have to work hard to attribute them myself because sometimes they do all look alike. Since they only chose from four names apparently that doesn’t help. If I had to choose a favorite I would probably choose the Seleukos I Nikator with the butting bull I bought at CICF this year that you liked. https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=6382
Many of the tets of Antiochus II Theos are almost indentical to those of Antiochus I Soter, and there is some debate about attribution. It comes down to the control marks on the reverse. I have a copy of Seleucid Coins by Houghton and Lorber and I will look your tet up later today.
yes, I do have a scale, a small battery-powdered pocket scale. I weighted it again and it is 10.87 g; the flan on the borders is very thin, about less than 1mm, but the relief of the head is thicker, about 2mm.
I can look it up but that would be a moot point as the coin is a modern cast forgery I am afraid to say. Yours is almost 50% underweight for the series. You can see tho OP is almost 17g.
It has been in my dad's collection for more than 50 years and yes, at numismatics.org they specify the average measurements as 28.80 mm, 16.56 g. So I really don't know. I can try to take a better picture
Antiochos I Soter, Seleucid Kings of Syria; 281-261 BC Æ, 16mm, 4.01 g; 3h; Antioch mint Obv.: Diademed head right Rev.: Apollo Delphios seated left on the Omphalos of Delphi holding bow and examing arrow; monograms to left and right Only bronze for Antiochos I Soter.
