I have recently acquired these Kennedy 1964 Half Dollars, and I am wondering if there is anything special about them and what they could be worth. The orange coloration and black markings suggest to me that they may differ to normal ones. Attached are two of the coins.
Welcome! Yes there are a few things special about these. This was the first year for this half and coincidentally was the last year our mint used 90% silver for our coins. So, your halves are worth around $6.00 each in silver value alone. The other thing about this coin is that it was minted a year after this beloved president was taken from us. A lot of people hoarded these coins at the time so there are quite a few available in exceptional condition. Condition is everything as it pertains to coin value. The colors you see are nothing more than toning that occurs to every item composed of silver.
There are varieties in the 1964 d kennedy halves that you should make note of the mint mark in some has been repunched. These are the few that will carry a premium. Good luck with your treasure
