Hard Times Coin

    Found this among Mom's small horde of random coins. Thought it very neat though I guess is not technically a U.S. (i.e., government mint) coin.

    Neat piece, there are many different varieties of this HT token.
    Very collectible.

    what is the date on the token? i cant make it out in the pics. 183x something is it?

    1834. And that I guess is Andrew Jackson on one side (not the hog on the other!). The way I read the Red Book, that was the only date for this particular Hard Times coin.

    bbfan, hard times tokens are very collectible. You should ask your mom where she thinks she got it from and report back to us.

    There are 9 listed varieties of the Jackson/hog satirical Hard Times token. All but one are dated 1834. Yours is HT #9, very common with an R1 rarity rating. Rulau lists it at $5 in VG, the lowest listed grade.
