I have a co-worker who is very close to retiring. He is inthe process of moving all his belongins to his new house in florida. On his last trip he brought items from a safe deposit box. In it he said he found a gold coin dated 1976. I looked everywhere i could find for information, but have not found what he said he has. One of the places i looked was the Blue Book that i have here at the office. I was skimming through looking for a list of mint sets released, since i know they didnt do commems until the washington in 1982. I also know they didnt make gold coins until 1986. But when skimming the book, i passed by the Platinum page, and he quikcly pointed out that the coin hs has looks like the fac of the gold coin he has.

I asked him to either bring the set back, or take some pics and bring themin to me. So hopefully, if he does either, i can post pics here.

Does anyone have any idea what this coin is? I told him places like Marshall Islands produce coins all the time with US themes, but he swears it is a US coin.

    I appreciate any help!!!

They did make some gold medals at the US mint for the bicentennial. One is massive and rare and the others are much smaller and not seen often. Buyers for these are few.

I don't recall the design right off hand.

Yeah, that's it .42 OZ of gold.

This really is a fairly desirable piece but they tend to sell for close to melt because there's almost no demand.

There are 3 selling on eBay right now. One ends in 5 hours bid is $310.

    no worries Treashunt :)

I pointed the link to my co-worker asking if that was the coin he has. Of course, it just so happnes NOW he is confused. He is unsure if the design he is thinking of is on the gold or on the silver coin :rolling:

SO i told him that if i am to find any info for him, he will either need to bring the sets in so I can see them, or take some pics so i can post them to get some opinions. He will try to get something done with them this weekend.

thanks for all the help (excpet Treashunt :D)

There's are similar silver versions which are all extremely common.
