I have this crappy low grade rim-dinged dime that I paid $10 for. But I think it's the rare STATESOFAMERICA variety, where the letters are all very close together. Below is my coin, followed by a PCGS VG08 one that isn't mine. What do you think? Do I have it?
Ignore me in my inebriated state. None of the other varieties are even close to your coin. Yours is the JR-5 STATESOFAMERICA variety
I edited and changed the orientation of my pic to match the known example. The rotation can throw you off.
It’s only an R-3, so I wouldn’t call it rare, but it has that Redbook variety premium. I habitually buy these early capped bust dimes if they are under $20
It is the large date variety, so that weeds out JR-1. The spacing of the characters in "10 C." weeds out JR-3 and JR-4. The "10 C." is positioned too far to the left to be JR-2. This leaves JR-5, the STATESOF variety. A nice hole filler for a popular variety! This die was used again in 1820 to strike the JR-1 STATESOF variety. JR-1 is the only "officially recognized" STATESOF die marriage, even though other 1820 marriages have the words deceivingly close together. Be careful when buying an 1820 STATESOF... the reverse should have a flat top 1 in the "10 C." and should have the old style narrow A's. If the denomination has a pointed top 1, it is not the STATESOF variety. Many listings advertised as "1820 STATESOF" are not actually JR-1.
That one is definitely attributable as a JR-5 'StatesOF'. 10 bucks is a bargain for a 1814 JR-5 so well done! It's only R-3, but very popular. Prices have increased very rapidly over the last few years. (They used to be more affordable 20+ years ago, as most coins were). I do not own the 1820 JR-1 'StatesOf', but have two examples of 1814 JR-5, both bought a long time ago.
