I'm Not familiar with Regalianus , but looks OK, all his coins were overstruck on earlier coins. a short lived general and usurper in 260 AD. his coins bring between 10K and 20K
Other than the fact that I could care less who Regalianus was, you just gave me an additional 10k to 20k reasons why I'll never own one of his coins. I'm sure they are super rare, but $20,000 for a coin of a guy that was a usurper for a month at best (probably less) and had 0 impact on Roman history, man! You really have to have deep pockets and be a fanatic about obscure usurpers to want to cough that much money. Not sure I'd personally do it even if I could afford it.
I've never owned or even seen one in person, but the ones I have seen photos of are wretched (even more so than this one). Other areas look off as well. I wouldn't be surprised if this is a Serbia special.
I'm also not familiar with Regalianus issues, but from what I've been able to observe by researching in images on the internet, the style is very crude and variable, just like the legends. In addition to very rare, they are really very expensive and appear very little in good auctions. I believe that the pedigree is a good key to evaluate it. Also, I may be wrong, after all I'm just analyzing an (bad) image, but it suggests a tampering of legend of an Antoninianus of Valerian II or Saloninus, or something young.
I'm not seeing Regalianus here at all. Genuine coins of his have crude, almost barbarous portraits; I can tell you with 100% certainty this isn't Regalianus.
And for the record, i would spend $20,000 on a genuine Regalianus. He was an obscure ruler, historically unimportant - but as a completist, I must have every portrait. There is something amazing about having all the portraits of all the men who ruled the Roman Empire, in one place.
The Serbian specials flooding the market worry me because I’m too new to identify them all. I’ll see a nice looking coin, at first glance, then realize the seller has a lot of similarly nice looking late 3rd century coins all coming from Serbia. Then I run for the hills.
Don't buy from anywhere in Eastern Europe, China or third world countries. Buy only from reputable dealers - if you don't know who's reputable ask the Coin Talkers here.
I agree completely. Of course, If I had 20000 bucks sleeping quietly in my wallet...but is out of my budget.
most Americans pay for Heavy Worn Morgan Dollars 10 times more , whats the problem with Roman Rulers that every kid on Earth Know >??
Yeah, sorry, still wouldn't spend that kind of money on him. If I had $20k coin money, I'd rather go hunting for some Greek gold or maybe a high end Roman Aureus of one of the well known 2nd century Roman emperors. But that's just me. To each his own.
@kolyan760 , it is a fake. I have the 1970 book by Robert Göbl, Regalianus und Dryantilla. Your piece does not have the same fabric or lettering style as all the genuine coins known at that time.
