Good choice! It'll take you a bit longer to complete an Ike set in ms-69. Are you just going for circulating date & mint or are you going to include varieties and NCLT 40% silver Ikes?

The law basically calls for the series to begin in 2019 but it gives the Secretary the power to issue a single coin in 2018 with G Washington's signature on the reverse. So that is the only design for this year, we will see the 2019 designs later in the year. The law was just signed, there hasn't been time for the Secretary to consult with the various Governors as to who or what the subject will be for each state and then to create designs.

Actually my Ikes were one of my earlier series I had started, but them moved away from. I only have a few mid-range MS examples. I'd like to continue with the high grade examples, but I know that will be much harder with some of the Ikes...

Any one of us could have come up with those using Photoshop.

If you actually have any, repeat any, skill with Photoshop it would have been hard to do worse.

This stuff has nothing to do with the art of engraving. It’s the stuff sketches are made of.

I really don't collect modern coins but like the Ikes for some reason. Some Ike incidents. Soon after the Gov't released them for circulation people returned silver dollars back to the banks. There was supposedly one reported case of someone returining a very worn Bust silver dollar (1795-1803) back to the bank. I know I picked up 3 Peace dollars in a Bank Teller's bin during that time.

I think you will be very hard pressed to get an ms-69 Ike struck for circulation; i.e. Cu-Ni.

    John Skelton Morgan man!

Well, I wouldn't say they're ugly, but they are pretty plain. And not worth collecting, IMO.

They are a disgrace to the mint and to the United States of America.

    V. Kurt Bellman Yes, I'm blunt! Get over your "feeeeelings".

    Coupla points:

    1) The design for the 2018 is pretty close to mandated in the law, which requires G. Washington's signature to dominate.

    2) It is CLEAR there will ALWAYS be, from now on, at least one, and frequently two, multiple designs per year coin program ongoing. SO WHETHER or not to do one is OUT! The only choice is which one and on what subject. Get used to it.

    3) Yes, I collect ALL the so-called Golden Dollars, all mints, all finishes. I have an utterly complete Prezzy set, Native American set, Sac set, SBA set, Ike set, and a nearly complete Peace dollar set, with only two unfilled holes in the NA set, based on MY criteria. While I do have them all in SOME finish, I am lacking the true circulation (non-matte) finish for the 2009 NA dollar. I've found some, just not nice enough for my set. All raw.

    4) The CCAC is on the case, having rejected ALL the proposed 2018 reverses AND heaping disdain on the obverse. Kareem Abdul Jabbar is off the CCAC now and most of the current members, I know well enough to greet them at the ANA. They "have our back".

    5) Forget complaining about the existence of this - it's a DONE DEAL! The best we can do is make it the best we can. Maybe we need to ask every Congresscritter to STOP DOING THE $1 note. That'll help for a start.

Why would this help? I WANT the dollar bill--not some dollar coin that has never in the history of the US been accepted by the general public regardless of the design.

not when it first appeared as a bust coin...or as a seated liberty coin...or even as a Morgan. None of which were accepted by the general public.

Sorry, but I like the dollar bill a lot more than the dollar coin. I still use a bit of cash and find a couple ratty pieces of paper are less trouble to carry than a couple of big brown metal disks.

True that - NO dollar coin has ever been accepted for general use in the US. The silver dollars were too big. The clad Ikes still had the same size.

The small dollar was the only opportunity and they blew it making it too close to the quarter. To succeed it needed to be sufficiently different in size and tactile appearance.

While the 2mm difference is sufficient between other coins, there is an obvious additional difference (reeded vs. plain between the dime and cent), thickness (cent/nickel/quarter).

If the dollar coin had a size between the nickel and quarter (so ~22mm) and was not round, it might have worked.

Okay, name me ONE industrialized country that is NOT “coin only” for the buying power equivalent of the U.S. dollar. You can’t because there isn’t one.
