Hello, I am a new member so thanks for having me! Here is my quarrel, I purchased this mint set for what i believe to be a good price ($15) I noticed that there is this discoloration on every coin except the one dollar coin. and the nickel. its VERY noticeable on the dime, and I am wondering if this is natural or done by someone intentionally. Here is a couple photos and hopefully I can figure out the value of this set and hopefully see if it was worth it. Thanks in advance
If you don't like the toning then send it back. Personally, I don't like toning and would send it back. Or, $15 isn't much (shipping included ??) and just enjoy them.
Something like this would have flipped me out 15 years ago. Today, it doesn't bother me a bit. These sets will all eventually tone depending upon their storage environment.
I suppose you're right but I have proof sets from the 70's and 80's with no signs of toning present at all (yet). I'd say it depends if one lives in an area with a lot of humidity and whether they're stored in a climate-controlled environment. It also depends on how well the case of a particular set is made, among other factors and variables. I'd say the OP's set was likely stored in a less than ideal environment and that the case was likely poorly manufactured or dropped, which has allowed a lot of air to get in; 2006 was not all that long ago.
I also purchased a proof set that came discolored. My 1999 proof silver set came directly f rye on the US Mint and was new and every coin is discolored. Anyone know why the mint would allow this to be released?
