Everything I had ever read about and researched points to the error 1887 penny stamped over with an 8 not the other way around. Anyone ran into this with this error coin?

The color is off on the 7. It’s been added to an 1888 after it was minted. Edit: I bet it’s raised higher than all the other numbers. I also bet a long dip in acetone plucks it right off.

that’s the thing though - the weight is on point - the 7 went under the microscope on point. Why make a fake of the opposite of what the error coin should be? Took it to a coin expert/jeweler, he examined it - told me the coin was not tampered with. Just odd.

That IS odd. I've seen some strange Chinese counterfeits. Maybe that's what this is. Maybe not. Dunno. It's a headscratcher.

    Welcome to CT!!

This is the first thing I noticed too. It also makes me think this was done post mint.

It could have been done at the mint ... in Beijing. ;)

The color is dead on. It just reflects the light a bit more because it is a raised 7. But under the loop it looks like it has been stamped over the 8 not added on top. Just a bad photo I guess. If this is a forgery - it is absolutely incredible. The amount of time to be put into a 1888 coin to transform it into an 1887 and create a wrong fake - would be simply retarded.

Sent it to PCGS for Certification. Keeping my fingers crossed. :)

I have a Chinese counterfeit of the 1824/2 large cent. It's similar to this one, where they made the overdate more dramatic. It's a ridiculous fantasy piece.

That's just it... no one took a real coin and created a 7 over the 8.... the entire "coin" is a cast counterfeit. The lettering is off rims are off, detail is inaccurate, and surfaces are grainy in areas. It's a terrible fake.

100% garuantee that is a counterfeit error. Probably a genuine 1888 IHC, but that 7 was no doubt added post mint.

Look closer. Lettering style and positions. Not even a real coin.

    Ok, thank you for clarification.
I don’t collect Indians or have much experience with them at all so it fooled me pretty easily.
