Ah, Congress is again micromanaging US coinage. Here’s the latest from Coin World. I like the observation but the coins....? https://www.coinworld.com/news/us-coins/2018/07/first-square-commemoratives-on-baseball.all.html
Why do we need more baseball coins? Does anyone care? Those stupid domed coins are ridiculous. I suppose if we must have more baseball coins, then one shaped like a diamond makes sense. I just can't get excited for it.
Apparently members of Congress are trying to outdo each other on stupid coin ideas, I.E. the state innovation dollar series. Personally, I think a single proof dollar commemorating baseball integration would suffice.
Why do we need to commemorate baseball integration at all? Give us a Rosa Parks coin, or an MLK coin if you want to celebrate something notable.
I been pondering this since I read it. And having just read the article & thread about the new collectors only dollar series...... I just feel the US mint is just over reaching at this point. Perhaps the design would have been intriguing if there weren’t so blasted many oddball mint releases in recent years. In ten years the Redbook will look like a set of encyclopedias. It’s just too darned much.
Don’t blame the Mint. These coins are mandated by federal law. The Mint has no choice but to produce them. The problem is not the Mint, but big egos in Congress who don’t have a clue about what they’re doing — and likely don’t care.
Someone, many someone's, actually, had to ask their Congresspeople for these in order to get a bill introduced to make them.
It seems unnecessary since the event was already marked by the 1997 Jackie Robinson commems (which I like). Never mind the silliness of square coins.
I should write them to make globe shaped “coins” in solid gold and silver. - commemorative of marbles - think of all the designs - a real baseball - the earth, moon and all the planets. A commem of the Solar System.
The domed gloves can catch a baseball but you can't hit a square coin with a bat. You can but it's not the same.
Colorized coins are coming to a US Mint near you. It’s not a question in my mind of if; it’s just when Congress mandates it for some goofy series. Count on it.
They've already taken the first step, altering the gold alloy in the breast cancer $5 to change the color.
