Somewhere, sadly I don't remember where, Grover Norquist led a movement to replace FDR with Reagan on the dime. This was after Reagan's death, of course, but the article said that Nancy Reagan thought her husband wouldn't approve of the change because he really admired FDR and would not want to replace him. I read this years ago, probably in a coin magazine. Anyway, Norquist also tried to get Reagan on the $10 bill but that also went nowhere. In any case, had Norquist succeeded, we would have had a dime change. But FDR remains, despite some of the controversy that surrounds him. Historians do generally consider him up there in ranking with Washington and Lincoln.
The key is coins WITHOUT people on them. It’s a good time to change. The youngest series with people is 54 years old.
Has there ever been a coin design that lasted 75 years unchanged? One denomination, issued every year, for general circulation, annual mintage at least 10 million (sometimes in the billions!). That'll be the Roosevelt dime in 2021. Please don't change it.
I really think in today's milieu, and polarity, it would be very difficult to find another President to put on the dime that would not create discord and perhaps huge problems within a large part of the population. Also, for the most part, changes to different people on coins has not been popular with non-collectors... think the Kennedy, Ike and SBA and Presidential dollars. Continuing with Roosevelt, who is generally now a 'meh' president (meaning most of the US really are not aware of what he did or even care or think about), is I think, probably the best thing to do.
I'd love to see him replaced by the "other" Roosevelt. War Hero, Environmentalist, Sportsman, and Nobel Peace Prize winner... if ever a man deserved to be memorialized on a coin, it was Theodore Roosevelt. Thoughts? It would *still* be a "Roosevelt Dime"...
I would rather have a winged liberty. The whole President deal started with the progressive groups. Only kings have been on coins, and I bet you George Washington would be appalled that he's on money!
