For the sake of curiosity, what is the most difficult collection or set you can dream of? Not as much of value but research difficulty and finding a dealer who holds these difficult coins in there inventory. Do you have any super strange or difficult sets?

That's a pretty broad question. Off the top of my head:

I'd be surprised to find a dealer who holds (say) a complete set of Stellas "in inventory".

Once you're done with those, collect a variety set of 1804 dollars.

Add to that a variety set of 1964 dollars.

There are loads of coins that are only rumored to exist, or exist but are illegal to own, or become arbitrarily difficult to get as you get pickier about condition or pedigree.

I have most of the regular sets around. Personally I was rather surprised at just how difficult a task assembling a full Kennedy half set was. For difficulty, given all the varieties around I think a complete seated half collection would be quite daunting.

The two cent and three cent nickel Dansco set was pretty difficult to complete. Not necessarily the two cent, but there are several 3CNs with a mintage if less than 10,000 pieces. With the exception of some early proofs, this set contains four of the rarest coins that I own.

My most difficult set would be capped bust quarters. They are by far lass common than the half dimes, dimes, and half dollars of the era, and many of them have been cleaned or damaged over the years. I aim for nice original G4 to G6 coins for the large diameter ones and around F12 for the small diameter ones. I have also omitted the 1823/2 and 1827/3/2 because I’m not a millionaire.

That said, I would think that Seated Liberty Quarters would be harder. Also collecting all 295 Sheldon varieties for early large cents would be very challenging.

Draped bust small eagle half dollars by die variety. There's only three coins but WOW!

How hard could it be? In the past 70 years something like 20 people have done it. One of them did it twice.
(I still have 43 to go)

You really want a challenge get the other 60 NC's as well. Only one person has managed that. (But another is only two coins away) I only have 5 of the NC's
