Who has ever found either an off-metal or a wrong-sized coin in change?
If you have found a coin that is both an off-metal & a wrong-sized one,
could you please leave a posting here?

    wrong metal lincoln cent??

found a 1975D lincoln penny in pocket change that is silver in color. Nobody seems to know anything about it, despite my bringing it to all the coin shops in my region. will be posting pics soon (my computer is too old I have to use a better one) And I hope to send it in with a group to be graded.

Long story. Suffice it to say he is banned from posting. Join the general discussion and you can learn at least some of the rest of the story.

I found somethin like this too! I think it might even be a 1975. I'll have to dig it out tommorow and check.

Not that I would ever recommend doing this due to the health risk, but I have read about scammers that would dip the coin in Mercury. It forms an amalgam on the surface that makes the coin silver in appearance with no evidence of plating. A metal detector should show that the coin is copper and not aluminum (which is what the trial coins were struck on at that time).

He is back evn if it is an old thread. IT is unfortunate that he got banned while he was here the only dispute that was in the forum was he used to call coins token sighthose were the days

Considering what went on in the older PRWE forum (when it was still directly connected to Coin Talk), the situation was far more complicated than his the token/coin/medal eccentricities.

And every time I see one of these old posts resurrected, I think he's been un-banned or something, ha.

    different looking

While playing poker this weekend with some of the guys found an odd looking quarter. It's a 2000 New Hampshire P with a smooth edge. Looks like its seen better days but all details are still sharp being almost 7 years old. Has anyone heard of smothies on the 2000 quarters or was someone bored enough to file the rim off completely. Gonna hold onto it and show it to a dealer at the coin shop here just to make sure. Any and all feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Ron, sounds like a regular quarter. The rims often wear smooth. I have several in my pocket. ;)

vending machines and slot machines ususally will wear the reeded edge off quarters.

    still odd

I've been to many casinos over the years. I've never seen a quarter with the rim completely worn off. Yes, I've seen wear but nothing like this. I've looked at the rim with a 10x loupe and I can't even see a hint of a mark. Still interesting, I'm going to take it to a coin dealer just to double check. Will get many opinions from different dealers. Can anyone tell me if errors like this have popped up anywhere else? (besides the smoothie dollars). i wish I knew how to take pictures, but I'm not that computer smart. This is truely one that makes me think twice. Can anyone tell me the exact weight of a New Hampshire quarter, maybe I can get it scaled to see if it has been altered. This is very interesting to me. If it has been filed down the scale would tell, correct? Remember this qurter is only seven years old. It does look like it's been banged around in a hopper once or twice. I still see the details on the obverse side, meaning 100% of the contours in the face are present.

The guys are right---it is post mint-
You see---the reeding is put on the coins (planchets) by the collar, and if there wasn't a collar the coin would be broadstruck, and be much larger than a normal quarter. There isn't any other way it could be done by the mint.
