Could the experts id this for me? I have no idea where tp start. It appears to have an HH mint mark. the rev gave me a hard time. Thanks.
Here's a current front page threads about this coin type: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/another-falling-horseman-post.320483/ and from there you can use what you learn to search for more info on your coin. Also, gigantic images aren't really necessary for identification or display. ~1000-1200 pixels wide is more than enough when the images are in focus (and larger doesn't help when they are out of focus). If possible, it is best to crop and join the images so they display side-by-side so the viewer doesn't have to scroll down the page to see both sides of the coin: And, welcome to ancients! Is this your first post on the "dark side"?
I agree with TIF that you can benefit from that other thread. Your coin has all you need to identify the obverse fully and with no doubt. The mintmark is not as clear as we would prefer and the two letters that show may not be HH and probably have other letters on the ends. I'll leave guesses in this regard to those with better eyes than mine and a firmer handle on the styles of the mints that made these ---- no pressure Randy.
Thank you for your replies and links. I guess i gotta lot of learning to do. All i gathered is, its a common Constantine Around 350 ad. Or so. And the rev is called the fallen horsemen. By the way its roughly the size of a dime. Any more info for an outsider would be greatly appreciated
it's Constantius II and, from what i can decipher from the mintmark, it looks like it is from Heraclea. In the exerge it looks like SMHB. Similar to the coin below, except it looks like yours is from workshop B-- the last letter in the mintmark looks like a B.
Here is a good start for finding reverses and then working from there" https://www.tesorillo.com/aes/_rev/index108i.htm I hope this helps!
You beat me to it and with way more information! I wasn't sure of the last letter of the mintmark but was pretty certain it was from Heraclea. Maybe I am getting the hang of this after all!
I will point out that there are three mintmarks that get confused a lot on poor surfaced coins. The last letter is varied with workshop and the first two as SM (Sacra Moneta). The problem is the third letter H=Heraclea, N=Nicomedia and K=Cyzicus with a little corrosion or thick patina can get hard to separate. SMKA Cyzicus
