    Hi all

I recently bought this coin on ebay in a job lot of metal detecting finds, I was just wondering if this Nero sestursius is real or not.

    Thanks Luca

(It’s sestertius, not sestursius. From tertius = the third, and ses = semi = half.)

    It´s a cast fake.

Not only one of the most wanted Nero sestertii (and therefore highly faked), but I suspect it is badly tooled where used to say WRL (base of neck at obv/at 1 o´clock on rev), which is a coin replica manufacturer.

Replica made by Westair Reproductions Limited, available here, along with some other fun things.

    Hi Luca,

As you were told on another forum, yes, it is a replica made by Westair, with their stamp subsequently removed.

Interesting artificial aging on that one.

They could have done a better job covering up the maker's initials.

    Welcome to cointalk !

Do you have any other ancients?

Too bad but I have to agree with the others. It's a scarce type and thus likely to be copied.

I think if the guy wanted another opinion that it is fine . So why point out that he asked on another forum ? Coin Talk has lots of very educated people with great coin knowledge so a second opinion is alright as far as I am concerned. We all had coins that we thought were something special . Sometimes the wanting it to be real, clouds our acceptance of what others say about a certain item . It is like a big let down. So to get another opinion, just to make sure, should be okay. I am sure the other forum has great knowledgeable people also , and gave this person good feedback . Welcome to Coin Talk @ Luca Fitz we hope you come back again with your questions , and you will find not only this forum but others all seem to have great people with years on knowledge . Most forums especially this one will give you the straight goods on your coin. People here like to help so come back anytime , and you will not have to check it on another because what you hear on this forum will be honest, truthful and 100% helpful . Dillan

It is disingenuous to ask for help with authenticity without revealing what you already know about the coin.

Nemo's response is precisely the reason that it was necessary to point out that the same individual asked the same question in a different forum.

There's nothing inherently wrong with seeking a second opinion from a different set of collectors, but when doing so, common courtesy would dictate starting the inquiry something like "When I asked about this coin on XXXXXX Forum, they thought it was a forgery; what do you think?"

Full disclosure about the motives behind a question will usually elicit the most complete and candid responses.

This was not an opinion question. WRL is a well known manufacturer of replicas for sale in gift shops. Their products should fool only the most inexperienced and they are clearly marked with the company initials. Here on Coin Talk, we see the question with some frequency. WRL is in no way a crooked operation and they supply things like Julius Caesar pencil toppers for those who want low cost souvenirs after visiting some ancient history site. The problem is that some people decide to scrape away the tell tale letters and try to sell the items as genuine.

Thank you for explaining this to me, I just felt that is should be okay. I see the importance of being open about having give somebody feedback, and info, on a coin at another forum. Yes, you are correct , it would have been best, had this been known to the members prior to answering any questions. I am glad someone pointed this out to the person asking the question , and to me also. I do see a problem with this, if it was a on going issue, with this person or any person that would ask the same questions at different forums. Explaining this issue in a respectful manner is always a good policy and my opinion. My comments had nothing to do with Nemo's answer. This had been pointed out near the beginning of the thread. Thank You I agree 100% with pointing this out , and being forth coming about the info a persons knows already. Being open and honest will always bring the best results. Dillan
