Think Im seeing Double....

    Am i seeing double LIBER and 996? Whats your thoughts?

    Yes you are but it's worthless doubling it appears to be DDD (die deterioration doubling). JMO

    Split plate doubling is when a doubled image appears because the thin copper layer on a copper-coated zinc cent got stretched out and mirrors a coin's detail. I don't see that on here. Usually found on broadstrikes. Here is one I have, and many of them have it around the front of Lincoln's face.

    Is that not what is along LIBERTY and the date? When you google image split plate doubling an almost exact picture shows up...I believe from errorref but don't quote me on that right now since I can't check.

    Honestly, they look kind of neat, but they are just stretch marks. Not worth all that much.

    The value depends on how thick the capping is (its "bottle cap" depth), the color, the grade, the year (some years have large batches of errors, some very few), and overall eye appeal. The one I posted would sell for anywhere from $9 - 30 depending on the day.
