Hi carpman98. Yes, I am in the right thread, altho' I got myself a bit entangled. It's 1927, the year of the peace dollar. Something I ought to have explained, earlier on. I hope that puts your mind at rest that I wasn't speaking from Lala Land !!!

If your mom and uncle want to liquidate the collection asap, you can consider an appraiser. If you choose this route, you may want to contract with the appraiser that he buy the whole collection or nothing (if that is your family's wish). You do not want someone to cherry-pick thru the collection and leave the family with the duds. This can be costly depending how many coins need to be evaluated but it may be well worth it since you have a lot of uncertainty to personally evaluate them. If your family wants to keep the coins, then take your time in educating yourself and get your mom and uncle involved in this wonderful hobby. Keep in mind, the hobby presently is in a buyers market, so if the cash is not needed asap, be patient for prices to rise and then sell into market strength. Either route your family chooses, patiently perform your due diligence b/c it is a way to honor your grandfather.

  4. thanks for all of the replies, I've had an unexpectedly busy week. We are certainly not planning on liquidating the collection as my grandparents were relatively poor and my parents and uncle are quite well to do. So I will be spending my spare time educating myself on it so that sometime in the not too distant future we can divide it between the families.
I should be posting some more coins this weekend as I got some new coin flips to put the coins in after I take them out to photograph.

I am happy you and your family are keeping the coins. Get everyone involved in learning and evaluating them. Besides enhancing family bonds, when it comes time to dividing the collection, all the beneficiaries will have a good idea what they want and WHY they may want specific coins. Also, if everyone is on the same page of due diligence, no one will feel short-changed and will create a happy experience for everyone. Blessings to you and your family.
