So I was looking through a barrel of unsearched coins I had (hoping to find a French 2c) and I came a cross this 5c coin I couldn’t quite put my finger on it country of origin which is important in helping to find its rarity if anyone has any idea of what it is please leave a comment.
Thanks all I believed it to be one of the more common coinsi found but I was curious none the less I was as I specified looking for a French 2cent coin from 2002 because France make so little coins and is among the countries where coins are more valuable than there bet worth along with Monico and 4 others 2002 however is important and this is why it’s not “rare as dirt” 2002 was the first year of the euro and Germany would have been transitioning to euros wich would have take 1-2 years and it’s in these years that coins are a little bit more valuable than other years because during these years stores etc would have still accepted there old currency therefore needing less coins minted but thanks all I really appreciate it
Well, the first year of the euro was 1999, which is also why some euro and cent coins (from France for example) start with that date. After 1-Jan-1999, a three-year transition period began; in those years we had the euro but the circulating cash was still francs, marks, etc. On 1-Jan-2002 the euro cash became legal tender. Germany picked that 2002 date for all its "initial" euro coins. That is why they are common as dirt indeed. Christian
These are the mintage figures for French and German 2 cent circulation coins from 1999 until 2002: France 1999: 702,069,000 France 2000: 510,120,000 France 2001: 249,075,580 France 2002: (sets only) Germany 2002A: 459,855,000 Germany 2002D: 483,000,000 Germany 2002F: 495,960,000 Germany 2002G: 311,800,000 Germany 2002J: 419,274,000 Both France and Germany started minting euro coins in mid-1998, thus before the euro was "launched" in January 1999. They just picked different start dates ... Christian
