Submitting coins for grading these days can be a lengthy and stressful process. It can often take more than a month to get the coins back. Sometimes they get lost. It's not very convenient. So what does the future hold? Will there be any changes or it will be the same, 50-100 years from now? Will there be smart slabs that somehow will grade your coin without having to send it out? Augmented reality so that the grader can examine the coin from thousands of miles away? Chips inside coins? Is there anything going to change?
They will just clone @Insider and stick him in a storefront at your local Wal-Mart next to the Pretzel/Subway/manicure place.
I'm thinking the guy can grade with the best out there. Maybe he said he did not care to grade from images?
Its all going to be based on demand as more collectors refused to learn to grade the coins themselves and pretty much rely on these grading companies
By that time the cruddy flea market copies we see now will be collectible, having been made in a time when you could still reliably discern genuine antique coins from fakes with the naked eye alone. Sigh.
In my little dream world.... The internet will die and we will go back to standing in a small shop with the dealer of your choice haggling over the grade and value of the piece that holds your current interest...... Alas, not likely to happen that way though. So I'll go with the Wal-Mart grading booth.
Back in the early days of the internet I used to call on the phone a little shop in Missouri, and have them hold coins for me I picked on an inventory sheet mailed to me, while my check is mailed to them. You used to relie on the coin shops expertise for "grading" of some sort back then.
Oh yes. I seldom "haggle" with any retailer over a purchase. Except with coins. I never try to bluff a fellow out of a fair deal. I just find it fun respectfully debating the finer points of a "fine" vs. "extra fine" grade handwritten on an old cardboard 2X2. Exactly that interaction took place yesterday afternoon on the coin below. Just a fun way to interact with my dealer that has turned us into good friends over the years.
It was a joke (obviously not a very good one) I was piling on, as i thought we were roasting insider. He eats, sleeps and breathes coins & i shudder to think what else he does with them.. Unfortunately he isnt a frequent flyer on CT anymore Insider if you read this- We miss you buddy ! Especially all the bickering you used to do with some of the know-it-alls !! Good times man, Good times
100 years? 50 years? Look at what’s changed in all aspects of our lives in just the past 20 years. Who would have predicted many of them.... The answer to the OP’s question: No telling. For the folks sitting here in 2018, the changes will probably be mind-boggling.
Doug has it right. The TPGS need to be around to protect us from C/F's. They act as a clearing house. That way, even if they miss a few in the beginning, eventually enough copies will come in to be detected with the help of specialists. Grading standards will also change. A former boss told friends they don't let me out in public as I'm too abrasive . They keep me in the back room in a covered cage. For authentication they lift the cover and hand me the coin. After rendering an opinion the cage is covered again. heavycam.monstervam, posted: "... Unfortunately he isnt a frequent flyer on CT anymore Insider if you read this- We miss you buddy ! I figure I could take a class on coin grading or go to my LCS and learn how they do it, if they do it at all instead of just accepting what they get. Or, I could try grading a coin myself by going online and reading my books, then posting pics here for verification or vilification!
Quickest way is to take a class. Then start looking at slabbed coins form 4 major grading services to "tune" what you learned in class.
In the year 2525, if man is still alive, if woman can survive, they may find.... That the only collectible coins are road rash coins with imaginary "errors" on them. It will be a post-reality reality. And then, all bets are OFF, baby. <iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/O6cQF3MLQVc" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe>
The only collectible coins will be those that have provenances back before counterfeiting was perfected. And it won't be long.
