The end of an era: Frank Robinson now using an auction platform

I suspect the coin will show up in the mail in a week. You will know it from the use of a half dozen low value stamps that add up to the correct postage. Inside will be an invoice and the coin. Frank also sells stamps at less than face if you want to send Christmas cards that remind you of packages you mailed in 1974.

I just missed on a Julia Domna I liked. Did land the Geta though.

I really like Frank’s auctions because the variety of offerings without a ridiculous buyers fee. Emax wasn’t great though so I just used email bid.

You can advertise in the Auctions subforum. As a Supporter I think you can do it once a day...I can't remember.

I just assumed it was a matter of who has “eyes” on the coin. So many auctions always running on the web back to back or even simultaneously. Someone who would normally bid up a specific coin is probably looking at another auction or just wasting time on social media.

Ditto. Good for Frank, for finally moving into the 21st century.

Some quaint, old-school traditions can be nostalgically pleasing, but others just get annoying when they slow or complicate things. I hope this transition, coupled with his loyal client base, will serve him well.

I do hope he still slips the occasional pithy joke into the auction descriptions, though. ;)

Oof. That does seem a bit much. Not that I personally would mind, but what's next? A DNA swab kit?

More or less what happened to me. I was fully planning on taking advantage of the latest FSR auction being on Emax to better search and bookmark lots of interest, but when it came sandwiched between Agora on Tuesday (where I won one lot) and CNG on Wednesday (where I won two), I just didn't have the time to go through another auction and match potential targets with available budget.

Congrats to all who won at FSR, I'm looking forward to seeing your wins!

I had that octobol in view, too - but Frank let me know graciously that my bid had to be far more than my max. In the end, it was sold just above my limit, that’s how things work with these fascinating auctions. But because I knew early, I was able to buy another, that I will show you soon.
However, I would like to know very much the weight of the Robinson octobol.

This is where Frank's auctions are different than others. Frank's prices realized not only tell you what the coin sold for but what the high bid was. In this case, you called and were told that the coin was over your bid because to win it you had to bid over the then high not the current level. When you look at a CNG auction that stands at $100, you have no way of knowing if that bid belongs to someone who bid exactly $100 or perhaps $10,000. Some of you will place a half dozen bids incrementing up the price but never exceeding the secret high. Frank would make more if he encouraged you to bid blindly up to your level but instead he told you to go away unless you planned to go really big. He also would lose the business of people like me. My opinion is that the coin was not worth the high bid but was worth the sale price. I'll bet that is the case with a lot of the lots sold by CNG to 'liberal' bidders like Cleo. All this is a bit of a game. Sometimes we pay too much; sometimes we get a deal; sometimes we ask ourselves why we did it the way we did it. I am anxiously awaiting one of the coins I won in this sale. I bid based on my total lack of respect for Frank's photography thinking that images that look that way in the past have yielded pretty coins. If I was wrong, it may well go in "Santa's Pack" and be given to some good little boy or girl come Christmas. I hope we all will be thrilled with what we bought in FSR105. I hope we will all fess up and post here both our winners and errors.

If you asked, he would have told you the weight. I only recall it was less than mine and I lost interest when I learned that I would not take over the CT 'fat Ptolemy' lead (I believe I'm third now). It looked like a pretty coin but a fatty fine beats a dieting VF when it comes to obese octobols. :playful:

My octobol came in today. It weighs 92.26 grams. Series 4, monogram E, Svoronos 446, 46 mm. Obv. a bit worn or less clearly struck. The seller put it in a neat red velvet purse! Very nice and realistic. Purses like this ought to be jingling with untold types of Greek gold and silver... but this large bronze is very welcome, too.

Here's a first trial of a pic, outside in the evening light. 1210.jpg

Nice one, Pellinore. (Isn't it just so tempting to skip it across the pond?)

Take care only to skip coins that are a bit more worn (or a toothless dog to retrieve it).

Do we have a list of the octobol weights across CoinTalk? I'd like to see that.
