I have a 1942 mercury dime it was my grandma's but this dime was in a watch.. it's completely sawed in half. Is it still collectible? On the back of the obverse you still see the reverse on it... I didn't really want to post stuff like this on here because yall get enough of it but I want to know if it's still collectable? Or fake?
It is not one dime sawed in half but two separate dimes. It would be worth something more if was still in the watch. Does the date have any connection to your grandma?
Two separate dimes? And I don' think so. All I know that it was in a watch. I didn't get to ask her much.
The only reason I ask is because some of the coin Jewelry is gifted with birthyear in mind. And yes I think they are two different coins. They both show signs of being cut on a machine lathe. I suspect that the two of them together will weigh more than 2.50 grams.
Hey Shrew. Coins have always been popular jewelry pieces. It is unfortunate that it usually damages the coin and reduces intrinsic value. But how cool is it that it belonged to your grandma?
Mercury dimes are a series that were produced relatively recently with really only one key date that had a limited mintage. They made millions and millions of most years and they were saved in great numbers. For a $20 bill or less you can buy one that looks like it was minted today with blazing luster if you wish. I think we're lucky to have such a beautiful coin so available in high grades. Any time a coin is damaged in any way the numismatic value takes a hit. Even if you had the rarest dime of the series, it wouldn't be worth much with a hole in it.
A silver dime weighs 2.5 grams. If it weighs 3.8 grams than the majority of 2 different dimes are making that weight.
