Well, after looking on ebay for the past hour, it really erks me what some people will call "PL" "DMPL" or "DPL" on a morgan. Its not just a cameo contrast, its refective fields. I see listings all the time about how this coin is PL because it has some cameo on it, but when you look at the pics, the fields are barely contrasted against the raised design. So heres what PCGS goes by for PL and DMPL morgans----- PL-"A regular strike that has considerable reflectivity with clear reflection in the fields at a distance of two to four inches. A slight amount of cartwheel luster may be evident, but this must not impede the clarity of reflection. If the cartwheel effect or the striations cause an area to lose clarity, the designation of PL will not apply." DMPL- Well, couldn't find their fancy talk for this one, but i did find that its 5" reflectivity plus, with cameo devices. ANACS STANDARDS----- At ANACS, the term PROOFLIKE refers to a coin with a minimum of two to four inches of reflectivity of standard typewriter printing in the fields on both sides of the coin. The term DEEP MIRROR PROOFLIKE (or "DMPL") refers to a coin with a minimum of four to six inches of reflectivity on both sides of the coin. At ANACS the term ULTRA DEEP MIRROR (or "UDM") refers to a coin with a minimum of 12 inches of reflectivity on both sides of the coins. So, this concludes my rant/education thread.
Some examples of definite artical usage: geographical features: the Equator, the North Pole... oceans and seas: the Atlantic, the Pacific, the Mediterranean... rivers: the Thames, the Seine, the Rhine... regions: the south, the north west, the Lake District... celestial bodies: the Sun, the Moon, the Earth, the Milky Way... (but NOT the other planets, eg NOT the Mars, the Mecrury...) most newspapers: the Sun, the Mirror, the Times, the New York Post... hotels: the Ritz, the Savoy...
Cody, Ranting is good - it cleanses the soul as it were and also shows you really care. Nice rant! clembo
Ooops. The Milky Way is not a singular celetial body. It is a Galaxy comprised of many, many celetial bodies. Cody: Nice article. However, if ebay bothers you that much, it only shows you are one of many, many, many people. Then of course every hobby, profession, type of work developes thier own vocabulary in order to impress others with thier vast stores of knowledge. Somewhere I saw an almost complete vocabulary and abbreviation pile of info on just coins. I'm to old to learn all that stuff and instead of P, PL, etc I just say Proof.
Forgive me, but when I grew up it was believed that a worker needed to master his tools to become a true craftsman or professional. In my youth as a journalist, and later as an attorney, it always seemed to me that the English language was my primary "tool". That's why I learned the rules of grammar and spelling, and how to use reference works to make sure I had it right. I guess that approach is considered old fashioned and unnecessary today.
thanks for the info!!! i never really knew what they all meant. i has an idea, but never knew for certain. of course, i never cared enough to look them up lol, but still... good things to know :thumb:
Well, I just got done polishing a 1976 kennedy half. I can barely make out Kennedy's silhouette and the date, but I can read text in the reflection that is at least 12" away so I guess that qualifies it for a UDM designation. Time to fire up the old ebay account and make my next set of millions. Thanks OP for the information, you are a lifesaver. PS. In all seriousness, Thanks for the info, I always did wonder where they drew the line for such designations.
Unfortunate but all too true I'm afraid Hontonai. It will only get worse I'm afraid as technology "progresses". Now seeing that you were an attorney I can understand why you are a "registered contrarian". The pieces are falling into place as it were.
