After 26 years in the Coin business and many more collecting, I learned that I have a heck of a lot to learn. You cant know it all. But you can enjoy what you like/collect/buy. Buy something because you enjoy it - not because you will make a killing on it. Have fun with what you collect, read a lot, ask lots of questions and you will do just fine.

One other piece of common sense advice, don't rush to spend your money. There are lots of things to buy and if you miss out on a coin, there's always another to buy.

    Have fun!

I have learned there is so much to learn on this forum. I have learned to stop buying coins like some crazed maniac off of Ebay. I have learned the true scimmy on that SGS guy from this forum. I have always despised him, but now I know more than the average person about this scam artist. I have learned to keep my ears open.

I think the other ones just have cert numbers, no extra encoded information on the coin. Actually, for NGC, the number is based on the number printed on the submission form and the line number on that form.

If you had NGC submission form stamped with number 1234567, the coin submitted on line 4 would have a cert number of 1234567-004.

WOW that's a great quote. I might make that one my new signature!

I liked what MIKEG said and it stands for me too. I've learned that I still have a lot to learn. That's a lesson I learn almost every week, and I hope that never stops.

Sure it's fun to install a new computer...now it's only fun if it's a good computer...!

I have learned a lot this week and year! ;)
From the 2 books I got, to being around collectors...

Also this year I have set standards to go by when buying coins.....

I will only buy better date coins (even if it will go down in value a day after I buy it   )
I will buy better grade coins.
I will complete the sets that are almost done.
I will buy mostly slabbed coins...don't ask why...just something I thought was good :D

Hey Speedy, I'll bet as you get more comfortable with your own grading, you start to change your mind about buying slabbed coins. From what I've seen, you're getting the hang of the grading thing pretty well. :D

I learned that Ebay dosent give a darn what they sell on there site.
China is trying to flood the USA and God knows where else with junk coins and slabs.
Remember the truth can't hurt you.

Well you may be right....the better date coins I'll be needing this year might have to be in slabs, but the other coins might be raw....

I'm looking for these 2 coins as they will complete the collection...But I might not find "the" right coin that I'm looking for this year...I'm picky.
    1909-S VDB
    1932-D-S Quarter

Since I want these coins to fit in with my set they will be in between G-BU in most cases....

    Speedy

One question...if you were buying a 1932-D-S quarter would you want it sabbed or not?

I think I'd prefer to BUY these slabbed in either case, if only for reassurance of authenticity. However, if it were a circulated quarter set, I'd probably crack it out and present the coin raw in the album with the others.

If it's AU to mint state, I probably leave it in the slab.

I have the same issue with a slabbed 1914-D cent. It's a slabbed PCGS AU-50 and I want to present this whole set raw, but I can't get myself to crack this one out given the huge price spread between XF and AU. I've considered buying a VG or Fine '14-D to put in the album while keeping the AU coin in the vault, but I still don't know. I cracked out an XF 1877 cent because the price spread between XF and high VF isn't that much and it allowed me to present the entire collection of Indians together...but for a '14-D it's a brutal decision.

I'm formerly known as the Queen- Lady Kyra will suffice for now! :D I found the book at the coin shop, I had been wanting a copy of it for a while now and there it was on the shelf! Guess it was meant to be... If your coin shop doesn't have it, I'd try eBay, Amazon or Barnes and Noble.

Hmmmm - I always thought I was pretty good at grading coins. But the vast majority of the coins I buy are in slabs.

Thanks for your input...the set is circulated but I just can't seem to bring myself to crack open slabs...I'll just have to...

Well I would leave the high grade 14-D alone and buy another one...I have a G-4 1914-D from PCGS and I think I'll have to find another one for my set...

Point taken. Actually, I prefer raw coins, but that doesn't mean that Speedy will. ;)

Not so much this week, but rather over many weeks, on this forum as well as the Coin World forum...I have learned how many truly caring, kind people there are.

Over the months, I have now had four occasions where I received personal messages from members who knew I was looking for certain coins. In all four cases I was able to obtain coins I needed from them, either as a trade or at small cost.

Most of these people I will never meet, but consider them friends just the same.

I have learned that the combination of eBay and a no-limit credit card can be a very dangerous combination :D

I finally learned how to tell a reverse of 78 from a reverse of 79...on Morgan SD's.

Also learned that this board beats the heck out of the other "big two"

Well I don't think that is a bad idea at all... I think in the long run it would help the coins to sell better too...I was at an auction and a lady bid $7.50 each for WL halves...she got about 20-30 in all...I can get as many as I want at the shop for $3.00 and sometimes $2.50!!!!

Thanks again for all of y'alls help
