I long for the days when my "sensor" had names like Kodachrome.

 

I understand and can somewhat relate, but the equivalent of free "film" is a major, major plus imo.

What reference book do you recommend for these?

 

I have Steve Tompkins’ Early United States Quarters book and I love it. Three years after it was published, Early Quarter Dollars of the United States Mint was published, though I don’t own a copy of it. From what I’ve gathered, you can’t really go wrong with either.

For attributions only, you can go to NGC’s website and go back and forth between pictures to figure out the correct die marriage. It can be tedious, but fortunately no bust quarter variety has more than 10 die marriages (1834 has five).

My setup can't shoot close enough for coins on one hand (my phone), and can't shoot small enough pictures on the other (my Sony), and I don't currently have ANY useful pic editing software.

I thought so. Have you never used the Preview app on your Mac? It's no PhotoShop, but it's a perfectly adequate tool for resizing photos, adjusting color, etc.
