Just got my 1878 8TF Morgan in the mail today and I think it is nicer in my hands than in the picture from the person I purchased it from. Questions for the experts, Gradable and if so what would you give it. Has the normal bag marks. I really like it. Opinions ?
AU58 Have you tried figuring out which vam?? I see all kinds of neat features- why theres cool die cracks and doubled stars and doubled olives leaves and doubled wreath leaves and doubled date and,and,and...
In getting my loop the first thing I see heavycam.monstervam, is a die crack from the last star just left of the base of the neck over to the "1". Still looking over it. Correct that with better glasses and loop, it starts from the "1", runs all the way around the obverse to the "8" and then stops.
Im not much help at the moment, as im driving all this week but if you cant figure it out or need help narrowing it down I, or maybe @Dave Waterstraat can help
It's a good thing I didn't say 62 then They are a little more lenient on '78s especially the CC mint from the ones I've seen.. I guess they had a higher percentage of getting bag marked all up
To be honest I wanted a 62 myself, maybe could have messydesk go over it. I see a double "N" and "E" on ONE on the reverse.
A 58 - slider - used to be a niche grade that offered both eye-appeal and value to buyers, or at least was according to my mentors and is something I've never been able to get away from. Seeing what folks call a 58 today (and in more recent times) is, well, painful. Based upon the photos the over all condition seems to fit well with what we once referred to as a "generic unc" although this was usually reserved for more common dates/mints. Take as you will.
Ive heard the old timers use the term commercial unc as well. Im guessing it has a similar definition and/or can be substituted
Pretty much and terms did somewhat vary by location. It was mostly applied to coins in the same manner numerical grades are, but just less exacting and was usually for those with negligible value differences from one tick to the next. Personally I prefer it to what we use today and simply because there was more emphasis on the coin itself as well as eye appeal as opposed to the "higher number is better" nonsense. Of course this wouldn't work well for the almighty TPGs and therefore had to go.
This what I enjoy, everyone always has a great opinion and good incite into these posts. Allows me to go over a coin like this multiple times to see what I might have missed the first time.
