I was talking to my grandfather today, and he mention that he had some old bills, the big ones he said. And he said he had a bunch of Barr notes. Anyhow, I was curious about the large size notes he said he had, so my grandmother dug them out to let me take a peek. I was surprised to see that he had alot more than I would have guessed. He had a few $1 Black eagles, crisp and Uncirculated. He said they were his grandfathers and that his grandfather gave them to him when he was little. He also had a few large sized $2 bills, series 1917 and series 1918. But those were beat up and falling apart, but still I really enjoyed seeing them. Those also came from his grandfather. Then he had stacks and stacks of small sized currency that hes saved through the years. He had almost $400 face value of Barr notes, and every single one was CU and alot of consecutives. He had around $100 face value of $1 silver certificates, all were series 1935 and most were CU, and a few were star notes. Then he had around $250 face value of $2 and $5 red seals, most of those were CU with alot of consecutive serial numbers. But theres one Id like to ask about. One of the $5 red seals, was a low serial star. Series 1963, serial number 00001725*, in Perfect shape. Not even a crinkle. Which is surprising, because he had all these bills in a shoe box stuffed in envelopes. I think Im going to buy some currency sleeves and put all his old bills in sleeves for him, just to help preserve them. Anyhow, most of what he had a CU and there was easily $1000 face value of odds and ends, nothing too special, but fun to look through. Anyhow, back to the $5 red seal star with the low serial number. Id like to ask any of you currency collectors, What do you estimate such a bill with such a low serial star would be worth??? Oh and he showed me a small bag of old coins. Alot of Morgans and alot of Walking halfs. Nothing too special, but I was surprised to see them. He also had a few Seated Dimes and Seated Quarters that his grand father gave him. I have to take my book with me to look up the dates, because Im not too familiar with the Seated Liberty series to know the values off hand. But I cant wait to look through the rest of the coins he has. He told me about his grandfathers piggy bank. He said he has a life sized porcelain pig, piggy bank. He said it was his great grandfathers and that its been full ever since he can remember. Now my grand father was born in 1928 and said that the piggy bank was full as long as he can remebr and that his father used to say the same thing. He figures that everything in the piggy bank should be pre 1900, and he figures that most of what is in there would have been thrown in there around 1850s to 1870s according to what he had been told. Anyhow, he said hes never seen whats in there because he would have to break the piggy bank to get the coins out, but he said we can try to drill a hole and he will let me look through it. He said hes gonna make me do work around his house and said hell pay me with old coins. LOL, I just want to see whats in there cause Im a very very curious person who loves to look at old coins. I can only imagine whats in there. And I cant wait to let everyone know what I find. Ive never known that he had all of that, but wow!!!!!

Amazing opportunity. I'd be right back there with my toolbox. Looks like a good chance for finding Civil War dates.

I bet Ill find alot of tokens in there as well. From what my grandfather told me, his great grandfather threw alot of tokens, Silver Dollars, and half dollars in the pig. And if he was throwing coins in there while they were new, can you imagine what kind of high grades I might find??? Um, does anyone have any suggestions on what I can use to drill porcelain with??? I dont want to damage the pig. Will a normal hole saw, do the trick or should I go out and buy something better???

Oh and I cant forget to mention, my grandfather said he could see a gold coin through the little slot in the pigs back. So who knows what kind of treasure is in there.

That sounds like something else! I'd be asking how much work you have to do for one of those Black Eagles. Sounds like you will be spending some quality time with gramps - enjoy - the time with him and the coins!!! :thumb:

Happy New Year! Dan what I would do it drill what is called a pilot hole. Pick a spot that isn't too thin or flimsy, maybe underneath the pig. Then get a small drill bit, maybe just a sixteenth inch, with carbide tip or even one of those diamond tips. Check out bigger bits used for masonry for your larger hole drilled later.
You have to do it in steps. The pilot hole, then maybe a quarter inch hole in the same spot. Gradually increase the size until it's big enough to work. Depending on how much you want to mutilate the pig another thought is to work on the coin deposit slot. You could use a sawsall to gradually make the slot bigger.
It will be a trying experience for sure.
Or use the Mexican method (of a hammer) a la Pinata style when all else fails. Sounds like you will hit a jackpot no matter what.
As for my Gold, well it's in a safe deposit box. Anyway I went there the other day and made an inventory list. So tempting to sell now, I could put the profits towards many needed key dates in all my series collections. But wait. Gold is predicted to go higher.
I'm glad I jumped on the stuff when I did. I haven't bought any more since about a year ago.
When it hit $700 I quit buying it.

How about one of those chop saws used for tile cutting? Or a brick cutting blade? Make 2 parallel cuts along the underbelly of the pig. Then drill out and punch out the space between.

try a tile bit just make a series of holes and knock out the center dont use a hammer drill just take it slow and easy dont drill where coins are you dont want to put a hole in a 50000 dollar coin

Alright. I like the idea of pilot holes to see how it drills. Because old piggy banks can be worth more than the coins contained. Im just not sure how porcelain drills. Id assume like tiles would be the closest thing Ive drilled through, but all that stuff acts different. So a small pilot hole might be the best bet. But I was also thinking of using my boss's core drill. He has a bench drill styl core drill. That has carbide teeth.

Oh one more question for the currency collectors. Well, first I still have that question about how much the 1963 $5 red seal star note 00001725* in CU might be worth??? Second, he had a large stack of Uncirculated German Marks. Every single one was dated 1944. He had a large stack of each denomination, 20s, 50s, and 100s. Id guess about 30 to 40 of each denomination. I found a link on ebay to these ones, but is that what they are worth??? Does anyone have an estimate as to what they are worth???

Try a 2" diamond hole saw with a high speed drill motor or if that don't work tape the diamond on a hammer, gauranteed to work...lol. The first should work fine.

Somewhere in an Antiques magazine I saw an article about a guy who restores old ceramic pieces.
He makes his living repairing cookie jars, lamps, sculpture etc. Anyway this lady brought him an old cookie jar that got smashed on the floor in a hundred pieces. He fixed it and even made his own glaze to match.
So even if you break it by mistake or have to do something drastic like cut off the pig's head; it is possible to repair it to look like nothing ever happened.

    IMHO,

Spend time with your grandfather, and the coins/currency. You have a life time to enjoy the money, but to hear the stories as to why your grandfather, and great grandfather saved the coins/currency will mean more in 20 years. My grandfather got me started in collecting, he is gone, but I still have the coins. The coins I was given only mean something because of who gave them to me (and why he saved them). I have coins worth much more I would sell tomorrow if I had to, but I will not his coins.

Just a thought (I will put my soap box away, sorry).

Thats some good advice, thank you. My grandfather is in rough shape, he can hardly walk and has had alot of health problems lately. And my Grandmother has heart problems, high blood pressure, and high colesterol. I dont think either of them will be around much longer, and I have been trying to spend as much time with them as I can. I just wish I was able to spend more time with my grandparents on my dads side of the family before they passed on. When I was about 7 to 10 years old, I used to work with my uncle clearing lots, mostly dragging brush and feeding the chipper, anyhow, I spent every dime I made on my coin collection, and my grandfather on my dads side would match whatever I spent, 4 to 1. He would pick out the coins that he was paying for and I would buy what was needed for my sets. He bought all the ones I couldnt afford, and he bought me alot of BU morgans and BU walkers because those were his favorites. Anyhow, I still have all the coins that he bought for me, and I will never sell them. Those are cherished parts of my collection that I will hold forever. I also have all of his guns and I have his bureau, that I will prob use for ever. Some of the guns he left me are antiques and are very valuable, but I dont shoot those, I just keep good care of them.

Isn't it strange what means the most later in life. One of the coins my grandfather gave me is a walker with tape residue on it. My great-grandmother would tape walkers inside of b-day cards (how many people reading this just cringed). The one he gave me was from his 18 b-day, the only one he kept. The coin has fuzz stuck to it and generally it is ugly. But I would not trade/sell it for anything (my wife said no one would want it anyhow).

that is exactly right.. I couldnt have worded it better, I miss my papa so much, selling his coins is something that dosnt even enter my mind.. I would sell many coins i own before i even thought of selling the ones he passed down to me.
