OK. Another old man question on my ongoing coin collecting addiction. Bare in mind, my goal with my collection is to just enjoy the beauty of the coins and try not to loose to much on them. They aren't really collected as investments. I have never owned or have seen in person a proof 70 silver coin. I have several slab, pcgs proof silver coins in the Prf63-69 range. Is the proof 70 coins that much more beautiful than a 69 by just looking at it? Is the high premium charged for proof 70 just mainly because they are rare in that condition? When I can, I may just buy one to say I have one. LOL. Then I can act a little snobby. LOL

I personally don't think so. This comes down to "how perfect" do you want your copy of a particular coin. It also depends upon which coin(s) you are looking at. The cost and population can vary a lot depending if it's a very modern coin or not.

I agree with @Clawcoins. I don’t detect any difference myself. I am sure it is there but reserved for those that inspect with high power magnification equipment to judge. For pure enjoyment, any proof strike will provide that satisfaction I believe.

On many coins, you'll see no noticeable difference between a Proof 69 and 70. Some 70s may even look worse than 69s (especially if they developed spots). If you would like to own an example of a Proof 70, they are fairly inexpensive for many modern coins. You can easily find an example on ebay for under $20.

Some reasons for why 70s can have high values include: registry sets, lower populations, and perception of perfection.

No. There is but a slight transgression between the two grades......a slight break of luster or a pin-prick anomaly........or you could crack it out and re-submit the coin (69) in hopes of getting a '70'.........depends on what those boys had for lunch when they graded the coin. Point is, they're all beautiful and it is difficult for most (including the TPG's) to distinguish between the two grades.

PF70/MS70 coins are like black holes: A lot of money goes in to never be seen ever again. Most here (99.9%) wouldn't be able to spot the difference between a 69 and 70 in any event.

69 DCAM is better bang for the buck, unless you're doing a Registry set. (And even then, but Registry Madness makes people do crazy things for that one practically invisible grade point.)

    In my opinion, No.

To a large extent I think it is a case of the greater fool theory. As mentioned a lot of money spent on them will never be recovered.

And consider this, if you cracked them out and sent them in again, probably a third or more of them probably wouldn't get a 70 again the second time around.

    I like this attitude.
I feel like MS69s are underpriced/readily available because of not hitting the magic MS70.

The 70 mania is making a lot of really great coins available on the cheap.

The grading companies need to add PR71 just to blow everyone's minds.
